On 12/25/2023 at approximately 4:153 PM the West Lafayette Police Department responded to a report of a head-on crash between two passenger vehicles in the eastbound lanes of Sagamore Pkwy just west of the Wabash River bridge.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that a westbound pickup truck had reportedly lost control for an unknown reason and crossed the center median, striking an eastbound SUV head-on. The driver of the SUV suffered very serious injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle by members of the West Lafayette Fire Department before being transported to a local hospital for treatment. She was later transferred to an Indianapolis area hospital where she remains in critical but stable condition. The passenger also suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital as well.
The driver of the SUV has been identified as Christine Carltson, 33, of Noblesville, IN and her passenger was her husband, Jonathan Carlston, 40. Sadly, the couple’s two dogs were both killed in the collision.
The driver of the truck was identified as Justin Hulbert, 32, of West Lafayette, IN. He was transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries. A blood sample was drawn as a standard protocol for crashes involving serious injury or death. However, there is no indication that alcohol and/or drugs are a factor in the crash.
The circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
The West Lafayette Police and Fire Departments were assisted on scene by deputies from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department and officers from the Purdue University Police Department.
