FALL PLANTING AND WINTER TREE CARE
Fall is the perfect time to plant a tree on your property and prepare existing trees for the coming winter. Here are some quick tips:
- Remove any dead branches, stubs, or suckering growth at the base of the tree.
- Have a young tree with smooth, thin bark? Consider using a trunk wrap to protect your tree from temperature swings during the winter months to prevent sun-scald.
- Water your young trees in the fall until constant freezing temperatures to ensure soil moisture, especially if the area is in a drought.
- Found powdery mildew on tree or shrub leaves? Rake up their leaves and remove from the site to lower spore populations next growing season.

We’re getting closer to begin construction on the West Lafayette Municipal Nursery. Grading and drainage plans have been approved as well as final design tweaks to the maintenance pole barn that will serve the site. The project is still on track to begin construction in 2023. Meanwhile, the West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Foundation continues to raise funds for construction of the maintenance pole barn.
On October 5, Community Forestry and Greenspace Manager, Bryce Patz, spoke to Purdue students studying plant production about the City’s goals and vision for the site. Included in the discussion were design features for a nursery as well as plans to produce trees and native shrubs and perennials for the Parks and Recreation Department projects.
Stay tuned for future updates as we anticipate groundbreaking!

SPOTTED LANTERNFLY NOW IN INDIANA
Cliff Sadof - Purdue University
Spotted lanternfly (SLF) (Lycorma delicatula) was found in late July in Huntington, Indiana. This federally regulated invasive species is a serious new pest that harms plants by slowing their growth and reducing fruit production, especially in vineyards and orchards. Finding this pest this far north of last year’s find along the Ohio River in Vevay, IN makes it possible for SLF to be anywhere in Indiana. Knowing where this pest is located can inform regulatory actions taken to slow its spread and reduce the harm it can cause. SUPPORT THE WORK OF WL TREE FRIENDS
The trees in the city right-of-way (“street trees”) belong to all of us. They provide shade, hold large amounts of water, capture carbon from the air, and make our city look and feel wonderful. WL Tree Friends helps the city plant, prune, and protect this amazing resource. Since 2010 we have helped the city purchase and plant over 1,300 trees – and we have pruned over 16,000 trees over the past 20 years.
If you like trees, want to maintain West Lafayette’s tree canopy, improve the value of your home, and reduce air conditioning bills, then please consider donating to our General Fund, our Endowment, or consider giving a Tribute Tree in honor of someone or a group.
