Michael Matthews, the person of interest in the crash, vehicle pursuit and auto theft incidents in West Lafayette and Lafayette on March 1, 2022, was taken into custody today through the combined efforts of several local law enforcement agencies.
A Lafayette police officer observed Matthews in a vehicle and attempted to stop the car, but he fled. A short time later, a Purdue University police officer observed the vehicle and Matthews stuck in the middle of a field in the area of US 231 S and S River Rd in West Lafayette. Officers from the Purdue University Police Department, West Lafayette Police Department, Lafayette Police Department, and Indiana State Police converged on the field and Matthews was taken into custody without further incident.
Matthews was arrested on outstanding warrants as well as current charges by the Lafayette Police Department. Any charges stemming from the events of March 1, 2022 will be forthcoming at the discretion of the Tippecanoe County Prosecutor’s Office.
