National Weather Service Declares
Winter Storm Warning
The City of West Lafayette is expecting a wintery mix of snow and ice, impacting the evening commute. The National Weather Service has declared a winter storm warning with a potential for area flooding. Take extra precautions while traveling.
The Street Department closely monitors conditions and pre-treats roads when there is a possibility of snow or ice. Plowing and salt operations begin once snow or ice accumulates on the streets.
Please help us by following these guidelines:
- Keep streets clear of cars, basketball goals, etc., for full plowing access.
- While driving, yield to snowplows - they are considered emergency vehicles.
- Please be patient with our crew members as they work to ensure main highways, streets, and neighborhoods are clear of winter mix hazards.
- If snow does accumulate, shovel your sidewalk and driveway in your yard - not the street.
- Clear snow away from mailboxes for mail delivery.
Per City Ordinance, when there is an accumulation of two or more inches of snow or ice, a snow emergency is declared to ensure emergency routes are accessible. All vehicles, trailers, and equipment parked on all emergency snow routes must be removed by the owner until the road has been cleared.
Purdue News Service has issued a press release asking for faculty, staff, and students to remove vehicles from marked Purdue and West Lafayette snow routes by 2:00 PM: Purdue University Press Release.
Emergency snow routes are linked here: West Lafayette Emergency Snow Route Map.
Review our whole snow plowing policies, sidewalk clearing requirements, and city priorities ahead of a potential winter storm weather event here: West Lafayette Snow Plowing.
Please give our crews plenty of space on the road and be patient as we work to ensure the safety of our citizens during pre-treatment road preparation.
Stay weather aware and limit travel if possible.
