The City of West Lafayette named a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists
The League of American Bicyclists recognized the City of West Lafayette with a Bronze Bicycle Friendly Business (BFB) award, earning it a place alongside over 1,400 businesses across the country contributing to the movement to build a more Bicycle Friendly America.
"We are pleased to honor these new and renewing Bicycle Friendly Businesses, who are helping to get more people on bikes in ways that highlight that the benefits of biking go beyond just the individual or the workplace and into our communities," said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. "This round of awards includes companies and organizations connecting the people who bike in their community to accessible bike share, safe riding resources, group riding opportunities, and so much more. As always, it is a reminder that our vision of an America where every person can safely and easily choose to bike is rooted in every part of the community."
The City of West Lafayette joins 32 total new and renewing BFBs in the League's latest round of business awards and 1,471 total BFBs nationwide, including everything from government agencies, Fortune 500 companies, bike shops, and other employers, all united in a commitment to transform American workplaces to be more welcoming to both customers and employees who bike. The Bicycle Friendly Business award recognizes an organization's contributions in shifting up and accelerating the movement to build a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone.
"Bicycle Friendly Businesses are an integral part of our larger movement to make bicycling a safe, accessible, and fun option no matter where or what your destination is. When more people recognize the benefits of bicycling, the movement grows stronger," said Nesper.
"The City of West Lafayette has been a Bike Friendly Community for just over two years. We're pleased to continue to promote the mission of the League of American Bicyclists and ensure that our residents in the biking community can recognize the businesses and services that do a great job supporting this Bike Friendly Community with Bike Friendly Business practices," said Jeff Kuhn, Project Engineer for the City of West Lafayette. The City of West Lafayette is currently in the midst of several projects that keep bicyclists at the forefront of our transportation plans. "Businesses in West Lafayette are stepping up and sharing their support for employees and customers who choose to use alternative modes of transportation, and the City is doing their part to support and promote biking as an effective and healthy means of public transportation with the new Salisbury/Grant Redevelopment Project along with many more trail projects in the area," said Kuhn, "Biking has helped me save on fuel and given me a way to explore the Greater Lafayette area in ways I could not with a car."
As part of the BFB network, the City of West Lafayette will have access to a variety of tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more welcoming to people who bike. When employees bike, great things happen: a decrease in our carbon footprint, a reduction to individuals general healthcare costs, and a connectedness to our growing and changing community.
