A committee of librarians and trustees met in the summer of 2014 to review and revise public library standards. The Indiana Library and Historical Board approved moving forward with the codification process at their December 2014 meeting.
You may view the new standards by visiting http://www.in.gov/library/5412.htm. Once on the site, click on “Changes to Public Library Standards” to see a summary of the changes made.
Next steps include a public hearing and approval from the Attorney General and Governor. It is anticipated that the revised standards will take effect January 1, 2016.
For any comments or concerns, please contact Jacob Speer at JSpeer@library.in.gov.
At our March 6, 2015 planning meeting for the Indiana Memory DPLA Service Hub, Jacob Speer outlined the plans to create a guiding committee for the Indiana Memory DPLA Service Hub. The proposed committee make up includes two (2) representatives from each of these groups:
• Academic Libraries • Archives • Historical Societies • Museums • Public Libraries • Special Libraries
The committee will also include the Indiana State Librarian or their designee , the State Archivist or designee and two (2) At-Large members.
All member organizations must have a signed data exchange agreement on file with the State Library permitting access to IN Memory and DPLA.
The next meeting of the IN Memory DPLA Service Hub Advisory Committee will be held on Wednesday, May 13, in the State Library History Reference Room, from 1-3 pm.
One of the major tasks of this meeting will be the naming of the Advisory Committee members, the creation of committee bylaws and discussion of various sub-committees.
In order to identify potential Advisory Committee members, we are currently asking for nominations for the community at large. If you would like to nominate a candidate for the committee, please complete this short survey.
Online registration ends Wednesday, April 15 at 2p.m.
The Indiana State Library is pleased to announce an upcoming webinar, Child Development & the CDC, in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Are you puzzled by child development? Wish you had an easier way to answer caregiver questions? Then this webinar is for you! Join us online (no need to drive anywhere!) as we share developmental markers, signs of concern and resources to share at your library. Angela Dubinger, new Children's Consultant at the ISL, will be leading this webinar along with Stephan Viehweg, the Assoc. Director of the Riley Development Center and the CDC’s Learn the Signs Ambassador to Indiana. This webinar is worth 1 LEU and is April 28 10:00-11:00 am EST.

Contagious: Why Things Catch On by Jonah Berger has been selected as the title for “Libraries Read: 1 Book”. What makes things popular? Why do people talk about certain products and ideas more than others? Why are some stories and rumors more infectious? And what makes online content go viral? These are some of the questions addressed in the book.
MCLS invited library staff across Indiana and Michigan to place votes on one of four titles to select one book that we will all read and discuss together for professional development. Jonah Berger’s book captured the most votes. In Contagious, he reveals the secret science behind word-of-mouth and social transmission. He explains how six basic principles drive all sorts of things to become contagious, from consumer products and policy initiatives to workplace rumors and YouTube videos. Contagious combines groundbreaking research with powerful stories.
MCLS encourages library staff to read the book throughout April and May. Related free events, such as regional discussions, live twitter chats, and Google hangout discussions will be announced and take place throughout the summer.
According to Randy Dykhuis, MCLS Executive Director, “During 2014, MCLS conducted a series of community conversations with librarians throughout Indiana and Michigan, utilizing the tools from the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation. The desire to have discussions in many formats, and to communicate with one another outside of our silos was a recurring theme. By reading one book together, we aim to create deeper connections among libraries that span geographic and other boundaries.”
If you would like to host and lead a discussion for other librarians at your location, send an email to Heather Ladiski at ladiskih@mcls.org.
Every January, Indiana public library directors (or their unlucky designees!) let out a collective sigh as they complete the Indiana Public Libraries Annual Report. The survey is lengthy, containing between 600-800 questions (depending on the size of the library), and takes a great deal of time and preparation to complete. However, once the answers are submitted, little is thought about it until it rolls around again the following year. We’d like to share several examples of how the information collected through the report is used the following year and beyond – click here to read more on the Indianan State Library blog.
