Statehouse Unveiling Planned for Busts of Black Legislators

The Indiana Civil Rights Commission and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Commission have announced plans for the State of Indiana's 23rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Indiana Holiday Celebration on Thursday, January 16, 2014 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at the Indiana Statehouse. Highlights of the program will include the unveiling of busts of James Sidney Hinton and Julia Carson. Sculptor Jon Hair, creator of the busts, plans to attend the event. Hinton grew up in Terre Haute. He was an advocate for civil rights and was the first African American to serve in the Indiana General Assembly, doing so in 1881. Carson, a graduate of Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, was elected to the Indiana General Assembly in 1972 and served two terms. In 1976 she and Katie Hall were elected to the Indiana Senate - the first  African American women in that house - and Carson served there for 14 years. In 1996, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming Indiana's first African American woman from Indianapolis elected to Congress. She served in Congress until her death in 2007. In addition to award presentations, and comments by Governor Mike Pence, there will also be a performance by the Golden Singers of Broad Ripple Magnet High School. Hoosier Arts Advocates to Host Annual Arts Day at the Statehouse

Arts Day at the Statehouse, hosted by the Indiana Coalition for the Arts, will be January 27th, 2014. The annual event provides opportunity for any arts advocates, be they arts administrators, arts educators, artists, or arts consumers to meet personally with their own legislators and share with them the importance the arts play in our state. Ten Artists Honored with Mercury Craters

The International Astronomical Union (IAU), an organization charged with planetary and satellite nomenclature, recently named 10 craters on the planet Mercury, all in honor of deceased artists, musicians, painters, and authors who have made outstanding fundamental contributions to their field, and have been recognized as historically significant figures for more than 50 years.

The Office of Raleigh Arts invites artists or artist teams to submit qualifications for a temporary public art opportunity in celebration of bluegrass music and the 2014 World of Bluegrass Week. Artists must have demonstrated experience in producing public art events or installations in an outdoor setting. Buck Creek Players Holding Auditions for The Women
Buck Creek Players will hold open auditions for The Women, by Clare Boothe Luce. Director Andrew Ranck is looking for a diverse group of approximately 20 females ages 16 and up for this comedy that provided inspiration for two Hollywood films. Request for Qualifications, Outdoor Sculpture, Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX
The Texas Tech University System is accepting qualifications for artists to create exterior sculpture for the University College Building (Bayer CropScience) Research Facility & Greenhouse/Headhouse. The Indianapolis Airport Authority (IAA) invites artists to submit proposals to temporarily install a work of art at Indianapolis International Airport. This opportunity is for one free-standing work of art to remain on display in one of two sites in the North Terminal Garden for two years, starting in July 2014. Artists responding to this RFP must be at least 18 years of age and reside in the states of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin or Missouri. The City of Dubuque, IA seeks applications from qualified artists over the age of 18 for the 2013-2015 Art on the River temporary outdoor public art exhibit. Each year, 10 sculptures are chosen to be placed at highly visible locations along the picturesque Mississippi River Walk at the Port of Dubuque. Selected artists receive $1,500 for loaning the work for one year. A $1,000 cash award for Best of Show is given to one artist. Sculptures must be available for sale. An award of $3,000 is available for each sculpture selected. Digital submissions via Hightail of 1, 2, or 3 already completed an available work will be accepted.
