Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment, or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving. Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for 5 seconds. At 55 mph, that's like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed.
April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. In April, ICJI’s Traffic Safety Division is funding a high-visibility enforcement campaign targeting distracted driving. From April 4 through April 8, motorists can expect to see increased roving and high-visibility patrols with officers on high alert for hands-free violations.
The effort is federally funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

ICJI routinely recognizes Indiana’s law enforcement for their participation in the agency’s efforts to reduce impaired driving. In late February, ICJI’s Traffic Safety Division recognized 21 police officers for their work in reducing drug-impaired driving. The officers are a part of the state’s Drug Recognition Expert (DRE) program. This program trains officers to recognize drivers who are under the influence of drugs. They are often called to assist with traffic stops with the goal of keeping impaired drivers off the road. |
