2nd Annual Indyfluence goes Virtual
With the COVID-19 pandemic came a realization among employers and educational institutions about the true power of technology. We’ve heard of online college courses, and may have taken one or two ourselves; we’ve heard of remote work, and may have had a handful of friends who previously functioned in that capacity as a norm. But the inability to meet in person for work or class instruction forced many to think beyond the desk.
As another summer (albeit, an atypical one) comes to a close, we reflect on how internships also experienced a shift from the tangible to the virtual world. Indianapolis’ 2nd Annual Indyfluence, an immersive program designed to build connections between the interns, employers and the community while promoting the development of young professionals in Indiana, pivoted quickly to ensure local interns were still able to get a feel for what it’s like to work and live in Indy.

21st Century Talent Region Update
COVID-19 has presented Indiana neighborhoods and communities with a variety of challenges, but it has also inspired new levels of connection, compassion and collaboration among local, regional and state leaders.
We have seen these leaders in action across Indiana, including Central and West Central Indiana. The Eastside Economic Recovery and Mobility District and West Central Indiana Region were recently recognized as 21st Century Talent Regions in June and July, respectively.
The Eastside Economic Recovery and Mobility District, spearheaded by the John Boner Neighborhood Centers, is a unique collection of Central Indiana neighborhoods including the federally designated IndyEast Promise Zone and surrounding Opportunity Zones.
The West Central Region, supported by West Central 2025, is a six-county region encompassing Clay, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo Counties.
Both 21st Century Talent Regions are dedicated to increasing educational attainment, raising household income and growing population in their communities, recognizing the importance of bringing community, educational and business leaders together to better connect Hoosiers with opportunity.

Coach connects students to career pathways
After completing the 2019 inaugural Skillful Indiana Governor’s Coaching Corps (SGCC), Amanda Galloway began a new job at the Purdue University College of Liberal Arts Career Services Specialist and now focuses full time on helping people to develop the skills sets necessary to find a new career.
A partnership of Skillful and the state of Indiana, the intensive eight-month SGCC program provides coaches with the tools and training they need to better serve Hoosiers in today’s rapidly changing labor market, while also helping them in their own personal and professional development.
Amanda helps liberal arts students find meaningful careers and utilizes many of the tools and practices she learned about during the SCGG program. The Emsi Resume Optimizer and the SkillsEngine Profile Builder are two of the tools that have helped Amanda in her new role, by leveraging these tools Amanda has helped her students be more aware of the skills they possess.
Together they analyze what skills they have learned through, projects, internships, or side jobs; so they’ll be able to communicate that in their resumes or job interviews which makes these students more likely to get the job. Amanda has helped students land promising internships, including a summer internship with the Indiana Department of Correction in the Parole Department and an internship for the American Civil Liberties Union or ACLU Missouri.
Amanda credits the SGCC for giving her the confidence to pursue a new career and the professional development that captured the attention of her employer, as well as the tools to help more people find new career pathways.
