Indiana Uplands designated 21st Century Talent Region

Secretary Milo congratulates Indiana Uplands and regional partners on becoming the state's third 21st Century Talent Region.

On November 18, Secretary Blair Milo and Secretary Elaine Bedel designated Indiana Uplands, an 11-county area encompassing Brown, Crawford, Daviess, Dubois, Greene, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Orange, Owen and Washington Counties, the state's third 21st Century Talent Region.

"Home to world-class manufacturing, research and innovation assets, Indiana Uplands is uniquely positioned to attract, develop and connect talent as the state’s third 21st Century Talent Region,” said Secretary Milo.

In partnership with the Office of Career Connections and Talent, the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and with technical assistance from CivicLab, the 21st Century Talent Region initiative encourages local governments, businesses, educational institutions, nonprofits, and economic and workforce development partners to create and implement a plan to increase educational attainment, raise household income and grow the population in a region.

Using a comprehensive, systems approach, Indiana Uplands and regional partners have committed to working collaboratively to identify strategic priorities and projects aimed at helping communities create a better quality of place, develop and skill up the region's workforce and connect talented Hoosiers with businesses seeking to fill high-demand, high-wage jobs.

Indiana Department of Correction recognized for innovative model

Deputy Director Megan Lalioff and Executive Director Sarah Schelle were presented with the Government Innovation Award for Public Sector Innovation on November 7 for their work on the Occupational Optimization Model.

The innovative model provides a high-level view of job opportunities, filtered by educational requirements, location and pay to show where an offender might find the best employment and wages.

The IDOC model is still in the testing phase but is expected to be ready for full use at the state's 18 facilities and 10 parole districts in the next six months.

CELL granted $7.9M to promote early education in rural schools University of Indianapolis' Center of Excellence in Leadership of Learning (CELL) recently received a $7.9 million grant as part of the federal Education Innovation and Research program administered by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education. CELL will establish a Rural Early College Network to help rural Indiana schools more quickly implement the Early College (EC) high school model. Spread over five years, the grant funding through CELL’s leadership will support faster implementation of the EC model by networking new schools with mentor schools that have earned endorsement for high levels of effectiveness.
