Batesville students travel to Germany for unique learning opportunity
Batesville High School students traveled to Germany this month as part of the German American Partnership Program (GAPP) for a unique hands-on learning experience and the opportunity to dig deeper into global issues, such as renewable energy, outlined by the United Nations Global Compact.
Hillenbrand Inc. and its Coperion plastics machinery subsidiary launched the exchange program last December as an innovative way to appeal to young talent and spark more interest in the manufacturing industry.
"We can develop a pipeline of employees if we can find more opportunities to reach out at a young age and get people excited about the fact that manufacturing means something more than running a piece of machinery," noted Glennis Williams, Hillenbrand's senior vice president and chief human resource officer.
After touring plants in Weingarten and Stuttgart, many of the students expressed interest in learning more about carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, including how Coperion handles them, how business is impacted by CO2 taxes, and the uses of renewable energy.

More Hoosiers graduating college on time
Graduation rates are going up at public Indiana colleges and more students are completing their degrees on time, according to a new report from the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.
The annual College Completion Report shows more than 40 percent of students who enroll in a public college or university graduate on-time and nearly two-thirds of students graduate within six years.
Completion rates have improved across two- and four-year campuses, as well as for 21st Century Scholars. However, gaps remain for adult learners, low-income and minority students.
