Office of National Drug Control Policy Director Dr. Rahul Grupta issued earlier this month a communication that outlined the Biden Administration’s plan to address addiction and the country’s overdose epidemic. This plan’s components include increasing funding for public health and supply reduction, removing barriers to treatment, reducing harm and saving lives, and stopping the trafficking of illicit drugs. The fact sheet entails how each of these objectives are going to be implemented. Some of the organizations involved in making this happen are the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Program and its Overdose Response Strategy, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
On March 3rd, Indiana Next Level Recovery announced the integration of all naloxone administrations by Indiana emergency medical services into the Overdose Detection Mapping Application Program (ODMAP). This serves the purpose of tracking real-time suspected overdose surveillance data, including naloxone administrations. This gives us the opportunity to alert other officials at the state, county, and local levels when areas are experiencing overdose increases. ODMAP has participating agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, which allows agencies to track overdose spikes happening in nearby jurisdictions that are headed to their communities.
More information about ODMAP is available at odmap.org. Communities interested in developing a spike response program should contact Meredith Canada at mcanada@indiana-hidta.org.
Please visit the Indiana Drug Overdose Dashboard, where you will find data from 2017 up to provisional data for 2021. In this dashboard, you will find data regarding opioid prescriptions, hospital discharges, and drug-related deaths.
