FDA Approves NARCAN Nasal Spray Shelf Life Extension to 36 Months

Narcan

Emergent Bio Solution announced in August 2020 that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the extension of shelf-life for Narcan nasal spray from 24 months to 36 months. Additionally, the company has also improved identification and storage requirements. The Generation II Nasal Spray Device can be identified by its red plunger and can better withstand different storage temperatures without compromising the effectiveness of the spray.


SAMHSA’s New Series of Advisories on Substance Use Disorder Treatment

The Substance Use and Mental Health Services Administration has published 11 new advisories addressing substance use and treatment considerations. These are based on the existing Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) and Technical Assistance Publications (TAPs). Some of the topics addressed are Group Therapy in Substance Use Treatment, Integrating Vocational Services into Substance Use Treatment, and Screening and Treatment of Substance Use Among Adolescents.


Gov. Holcomb Announces Initiative to Place Overdose Reversal Kits in All 92 Counties

Gov. Eric J. Holcomb and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration’s Division of Mental Health and Addiction recently announced that the state will partner with Overdose Lifeline, Inc. to increase access to naloxone by purchasing 24/7 accessible Naloxboxes. A Naloxbox is a hard acrylic box, placed on an exterior building wall so anyone can access naloxone at any time. It typically has 6-8 doses of the opioid overdose reversal agent along with instructions on how to deploy the agent. The Naloxbox also contains treatment referral cards. Overdose Lifeline Inc. is an Indiana not-for-profit dedicated to helping, individuals, families and communities battle substance use disorders. Overdose Lifeline, Inc. will be purchase 215 Naloxboxes at the price of $58,200 with funds made available through SAMSHA’s state opioid response grant. This initiative is addition the nearly $1 million funding Gov. Holcomb announced in May 2020 for the distribution of naloxone.

Public Safety and Public Health Partnerships to Address Stimulants.

Noon - 4 p.m. EST, Thursday-Friday, March 11-12

This virtual meeting is being assembled by RTI International and the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF). There will be four panels over the two days, with each panel being approximately 90 minutes long. The goal of this meeting is to bring together stakeholders to highlight effective partnerships and promising practices for addressing stimulants. A detailed report highlighting the findings of the discussions that take place will be available after the sessions.

Indiana Opioid Echo - Virtual ECHO Clinic for Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder and Stimulant Use Disorder

Noon – 1 p.m., Wednesdays (Series), January – March 2021

This free TeleECHO clinic aims to teach participants on how to identify and manage patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) and stimulant use disorder (SUD). The goal is to have a team of experts present on information related to medication-assisted treatment and continuity of care increase clinical competence in treating OUD and SUD. It is designed as a drop-in model, so attendance every week is not necessary. Additionally, this is an opportunity to gather CME credits, each session counts for one credit.
