Crash on I80/94 Causing Traffic Delays

Lake County- Troopers with the Indiana State Police Lowell Post have been at the scene of a crash on I80/94 that has caused traffic delays for several hours today.

On August 1, 2024, at approximately 9:10 a.m. CST troopers responded to a crash between two semis near the 2.3 mile marker in the westbound lanes of I80/94.  Preliminary investigation indicates that a white Kenworth tanker trucker was traveling westbound when it was sideswiped by a gray 2014 Freghtliner, driven by Abdi Warsame, 54 of Columbus, OH.  This crash caused the Kenworth to hit the concrete barrier wall between the eastbound and westbound lanes and roll over.  The cab of the Kenworth came to rest on its left side on the inside shoulder of westbound lanes.  The tanker trailer, loaded with coal tar crossed the barrier wall, coming to rest on the inside shoulder of the eastbound lanes. Neither Warsame nor the driver of the Kenworth, Dustin Beemer, 30 of Channahon, IL were injured in the crash.

The tanker trailer did lose some of its load of coal tar.  Remediation crews are on scene for the cleanup.  The two inside lanes of westbound lanes and the two inside lanes of eastbound lanes are closed for offloading the tanker and removal of the vehicles.  Cleanup of the scene is almost complete but delays can be expected due to a large backup of traffic.
