Indiana State Police Investigating a Fatal Crash in Wayne County

(Wayne County) Saturday night, troopers from the Indiana State Police Pendleton District and the Cambridge City Police Department responded to a single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a Monrovia man.

On January 27, 2024 around 8:45 p.m., Wayne County Dispatch requested the assistance of the Indiana State Police to investigate a crash that occurred on Interstate 70 at the 141.3-mile marker. As first responders arrived, they located the driver and attempted to administer life saving procedures before being relieved by EMS. 

A preliminary investigation conducted by Trooper Josh Bayly revealed that a white 2015 Ford Taurus was westbound on Interstate 70.   For an unknown reason the driver lost control of the vehicle and overcorrected.  The vehicle ran off the southside of the roadway.  As the vehicle entered into the grassy median, the tires stuck in the soft mud and caused the vehicle to roll.  Investigators determined the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The Wayne County Coroner later identified the driver as Jack Lyons, 56, of Monrovia, Indiana. The family of the deceased has been notified.

It was later determined a tire detached from the Ford Taurus and collided with another vehicle traveling eastbound on Interstate 70. The occupants of the second vehicle where checked out and release by medical personnel. 

The left lane of Interstate 70 westbound at the 141.3-mile marker was shut down for approximately two hours.

Members of the Indiana State Police, Wayne County Sheriff's Depatment, Cambridge City Police Department, Wayne County Coroner's Office, Centerville Volunteer Fire Department, Reid EMS, INDOT and Pardo's Towing assisted Trooper Bayly with this investigation and clean up of the scene.
