Johnson County, IN - At 4:22 this morning, the Johnson County Sheriff's Dispatch Center began receiving emergency calls about a serious crash on I-65 southbound near the 93.7 mile marker, which is approximately 3 miles north of the Franklin Exit. The first deputies on scene advised a passenger car was underneath a semi-trailer, heavily damaged and was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters and Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene, extinguished the flames and extricated an adult female from the wreckage, she was pronounce deceased at the scene. There were no other injuries reported.
Indiana State Police Crash Reconstructionists responded to the scene to conduct the investigation. Preliminary investigation determined 23 year old Destiny Johnson of Indianapolis was driving a Chevrolet Malibu southbound on I-65 when for unknown reasons she drove off the right side of the road onto the shoulder and struck the rear end of a parked semi tractor-trailer. The reason for the semi being stopped on the side of the interstate is still under investigation. The southbound lanes of I-65 were restricted for over 4 hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage was removed. At this time, investigators have not determined what caused Ms. Johnson to drive onto the shoulder.
