SR46 Crash Claims Life of Gosport Man

Ellettsville, IN – At approximately 4:37 p.m., on Friday, May 12, Troopers from Indiana State Police Post Bloomington and officers from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and Ellettsville Police Department responded to a vehicle crash on SR46 east of the West Flatwoods Road intersection and west of Ellettsville.

Upon arrival at the scene, Trooper Curtis Wilder and assisting officers found a blue Subaru four-door Legacy and a Ford E350 Super Duty passenger van, both with extensive damage. The Subaru Legacy was off the roadway while the Ford E350 Super Duty faced westbound in the emergency lane. The Ford E350 Super Duty was serving as a transport vehicle for Rural Transit and at the time of the crash was transporting four passengers.

The driver of the Subaru Legacy, identified as William D. Kenfield, 68, of Gosport, appeared fatally injured to arriving Ellettsville Fire Department personnel. The Monroe County Coroner pronounced William Kenfield dead at the scene.

The driver of the Ford E350 Super Duty passenger van, Douglas E. Sims, 65, of Spencer, was transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment. The four passengers were transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries as well.

The Indiana State Police made notification to the Kenfield family. As a result of the crash, vehicle traffic on eastbound and westbound SR46 was diverted.

Sergeant Eric Russell, a certified crash reconstructionist for the Indiana State Police, arrived at the scene to assist Trooper Wilder with the crash investigation. The crash investigation remains ongoing, and there is no further information to release at this time.

Responding and assisting agencies included the Ellettsville Fire Department, Ellettsville Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, and IU Health Bloomington EMS.
