Elkhart County-This morning, May 15, 2018, troopers responded to a report of
a crash between two semis on the Indiana Toll Road near the 87.5 mile marker,
westbound. This is just east of the
Elkhart/St. Joseph County line.
Preliminary investigation by Senior Trooper Andrew Inczauskis shows that,
around 6:45 a.m., a white 2018 Freightliner, operated by Carlos Enrique Padron
Ceballos, age 62 of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, was pulled over to the right shoulder. Ceballos purportedly was checking the tires
on the right side of his truck when it was hit by a white 2015 Freightliner,
driven by Robert Lewandowski, age 54 of Chicopee, Massachusetts. Lewandowski had been driving westbound when
he drifted to the right and collided with the left rear of the trailer being
towed by Ceballos, spilling the cargo from the trailer. The Freightliner driven by Lewandowski
continued westbound and entered the ditch to the north of the westbound lanes
of the Indiana Toll Road.
The collision caused most of the cab of Lewandowski’s semi to be ripped
off. The use of his seatbelt kept him in his exposed seat and
from being thrown from the cab.
Lewandowski suffered minor injuries.
Ceballos was thrown into the north ditch as a result of the crash and
also suffered minor injuries.
Ceballos and Lewandowski were both transported to St. Joseph Regional
Medical Center for treatment for their injuries.
The right lane of the Indiana Toll Road remains closed for removal of both semis at the 87.5 mile marker westbound.
The Indiana State Police was assisted by Clay Territory Fire and E.M.S., ITRCC Maintenance, SunPro and Moore's Towing.
*All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
