Schedule your 2019 field trip to the Indiana State Museum!

Museum admission is FREE for pre-registered, accredited schools or homeschool groups of 10 or more Indiana K-12 students.

What will you and your students do?

  • Walk beneath depictions of ancient sea animals that once lived in Indiana, and see real fossils they left behind.
  • See the biggest wall of Ice Age bones ever presented, and walk with a parade of Ice Age giants.
  • Hear the Potawatomi story, ‘Why the Bear has a Short Tail,’ told by a Potawatomi story teller and illustrated by a Miami artist.
  • Travel through time to walk amongst Indiana’s diverse and dramatic landscapes as early European explorers would have seen them. Learn about the large animals that once roamed through our towering forests and the birds that flocked to our extensive wetlands.
  • Engage your senses of touch, sight and sound in the R.B. Annis Naturalist’s Lab, a place for hands-on exploration of different sciences, including paleobiology, archaeology, geology and more.
  • Discover early versions of objects such as washing machines, gym equipment and cars, and compare to how they look and function today.
  • Listen to performances of one of Southern African Americans’ oldest art forms called spirituals, and consider what the words mean to them.
  • And, discover so much more as you and your students explore three floors of permanent and changing experiences.

How can you customize your field trip?

  • Add a school program. We have a variety of options to choose from that will complement the learning in your classroom.
  • Add an educational theater performance. Your students will find themselves in the thick of the action!
  • Add an IMAX® film. The IMAX® Theater in the Indiana State Museum offers compelling documentaries on its giant IMAX® screens. (Be sure to check out the currently running documentary, "Dream Big: Engineering Our World.")
  • Add a Peewinkle's Puppet show. These captivating creative puppet shows offer a unique experience for school groups.

To see how school programs and educational theater performances align with Indiana Academic standards, see page 52 of our education program guide.

How are free field trips made possible?
Offering memorable and educational field trips requires many resources, which our generous sponsors help provide. The 2018-2019 field trip fund is supported by Red Gold, OneAmerica, the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA), MacAllister, the Pacers Foundation, and the Horseshoe Foundation of Floyd County. We are so thankful for their support!
