The Wednesday Word will take a brief holiday hiatus next week, but will return on Dec. 29.
The Indiana State Library will be closed on Thursday, Dec. 23; Friday, Dec. 24; and Friday, Dec. 31.
The Indiana State Library wishes everyone a happy and safe holiday season.
The Indiana Library and Historical Board voted unanimously on Dec. 3 to keep the cost of the Public Library Access Card at $65 effective Jan. 1, 2022.
The PLAC program allows library patrons to purchase a card which permits them to borrow materials directly from any public library in Indiana.
Any individual who holds a valid Indiana public library card may obtain a PLAC card. The cost of the card is $65 and each card is valid for 12 months after being issued.
The Indiana State Library collects the revenue from the sale of these cards and places it in a designated fund account for the PLAC program. After the end of the calendar year, all of the money collected is distributed back to libraries on the basis of net loans.
The Indiana State Library is currently seeking blogs from Indiana libraries to feature in the Wednesday Word newsletter on a monthly basis. This includes public libraries, academic libraries and special libraries.
Blogs featured in the Wednesday Word have potential to be exposed to a wider audience. Additionally, libraries can use this opportunity to share information about annual events, programs, groundbreakings or general library happenings.
Interested libraries should send the name of the library, contact information, a link to the blog and a brief description of its content to John Wekluk, communications director at the Indiana State Library. Libraries should note if they have an annual event that they feature in their blog, as it will help determine the schedule.
Any questions about featuring a blog can also be sent to the communications director.

This throwback photograph of two youths playing in the snow depicts Spring Mill State Park in December 1944. The neglected Spring Mill Village that had been abandoned at the very end of the 19th century became a part of the state parks system in the 1920s. Such a scenic shot was made possible by the hard work of the Civilian Conservation Corps, a federal initiative established under Franklin D. Roosevelt that created numerous jobs and oversaw the restoration of the area - including buildings, trails, picnic areas and other facilities - in the 1930s. The Granny White House, the building featured in the photograph, was moved to the site in 1931.
The scene further captures a peaceful moment less than a year before the end of World War II. This photograph and other images of Spring Mill State Park from the General Photograph Collection can be found in the Indiana State Library's Digital Collections.
The Monroe County Public Library has announced Josh Wolf as its inaugural assistant director of public services. The new position supports all of the library's public services managers to ensure that they are working in the same direction across the library's various audiences and locations, with the goal of serving the community and executing the library's strategic plan. Wolf's role will be to provide support through training, mentoring and direct supervision.
Wolf has worked at the Monroe County Public Library for more than 14 years, first as the children's services manager and then as the community and customer engagement manager. Previous to his work at MCPL, Wolf held positions at the at Bartholomew County Public Library and Johnson County Public Library and at the Fairfax County Public Library in Virginia.
Wolf says he's excited to develop new training programs for the library's staff and managers. "We have a new structure for public services and are in the early stages of a revised approach to training, which will help us deliver better services than ever. I'm also excited about supporting the development of new programs and services through the lens of equity and inclusion. Monroe County is such a beautifully diverse community and our staff and partners are passionate about reflecting that diversity."
