Collection diversity webinar scheduled for Dec. 15

powe

On Wednesday, Dec. 15 at 11 a.m., Kymberlee Powe, children and young adult consultant for the Connecticut State Library Division of Library Development, will present "From Diversity to Inclusion: How to Audit Your Collection and Why." The hourlong webinar will dive into the makeup of the publishing industry.

Attendees will learn how to identify the difference between a diverse collection and an inclusive one. Powe will also walk through the logistics of performing a diversity audit of a collection. The examples and resources provided in the session will focus on youth collections; however, the methodology of performing a diversity audit - and the reasons to do so - are universal to all collections.

The webinar is presented by the Connecticut State Library, in collaboration with the Indiana State Library, the Library of Michigan and the State Library of Ohio. Attendees should be prepared to exchange ideas with library staff.

The webinar is eligible for one LEU for Indiana library staff. Click here to read more and to register. A Zoom link will be sent to those registered a day prior to the session.

Those who can't attend in person can request a recording of the presentation be sent to them via this form. Note that it may take up to 30 days to receive the recording. It will also be posted on Indiana State Library's archived training page.

Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library hosts Our Heroes’ Tree initiative

tree

From now until Nov. 30, the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library will host the Our Heroes’ Tree initiative. The Heroes’ Tree is based on a nationwide initiative co-founded by Stephanie Pickup, author of "The Soldier's Tree," and Marlene Lee, author of "The Hero in My Pocket."

The Heroes' Tree includes all branches of military service - Active Duty, Guard and Reserve - and all generations. Patrons can honor a loved one in the military by making a paper star ornament and adding that loved one's military branch and name to the star and then adding it to the tree.

Those who would like to add an ornament to the Heroes’ Tree in honor of a loved one's military service can stop by the library at 1120 Stafford Road in Plainfield. For more information, visit the library’s website or call 317-839-6602.

Stenotypists panoramic photograph

steno

The stenotype machine was a form of shorthand typewriter upon which multiple keys were pressed to create syllables, words and phrases. They were utilized mainly for real-time audio transcription for court reporting and other events. This panoramic photograph was taken at the Claypool Hotel in Indianapolis during the National Association of Stenotypists gathering in 1916, which took place during a brief period when Indianapolis was home to The Stenotype Company. From 1913 until it was contracted by the U.S. Government to produce munitions for the war in 1918, the company produced stenotype machines in the Mars Hill neighborhood of Indianapolis. It never recovered from this work aiding the country during World War I and closed in 1919.

The original panoramic photograph is currently on display in the State Library's Exhibition Hall as part of the "More to Explore at the Indiana State Library" exhibition highlighting lesser-known collections and services. It was included to feature work done in collaboration between the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division and the Conservation Division. Since this scan was taken, visible tape was removed and the photograph was cleaned. Come see it and other items from all the divisions at the Indiana State Library from now through the end of February.

IndyPL partners with IUPUI Center for Urban Health to offer free lead screening kits

indypl

The Indianapolis Public Library has partnered with the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Center for Urban Health to help Marion County residents screen for lead around their homes. Free lead screening kits can be used to screen water, paint, soil and dust.

Kits are available at 13 IndyPL locations. Once a participant collects their samples, which takes only about 20 minutes, they can return their kit to the library to be sent to the IUPUI lab for processing. After just a few weeks, participants will receive a report indicating whether or not lead is present and ways to prevent lead exposure so they can make the best health and wellness decisions for their families.

The 13 libraries offering the kits are the same that offer seed libraries, an initiative of IndyPL to offer free vegetable, flower and herb seeds for patrons interested in gardening. The seed library is wrapping up for the season and will restart in March.

This project enables IUPUI researchers the opportunity to expand on previous research on soil contamination, including lead in Marion County. The lead screening kits are available to four Indiana counties, including Marion, thanks to a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant to the University of Notre Dame and IUPUI to broaden the Notre Dame Lead Innovation Team lead screening program.

Click here to read the full IndyPL press release and to view a list of the branches with available kits.
