The Indiana Arts Commission, in partnership with the Indiana State Library, announced today that the works of 30 poets have been added to the State of Indiana's poetry archive, INverse.
An initiative of former Indiana Poet Laureate Adrian Matejka, INverse celebrates and preserves the diverse range of Indiana poetry for future generations of Indiana writers and readers.
“The Indiana State Library is pleased to partner for a second year with the Indiana Arts Commission on this project. The INverse Poetry Archive is important in preserving the work of Indiana poets for the benefit of future generations,” said Jacob Speer, Indiana State Librarian.
“'May you live in interesting times.' For better or worse, this ancient Chinese proverb certainly holds true today. The INverse Poetry Archive is therefore more important than ever, showcasing and preserving the hopes and fears, and prayers and predictions of the residents of our state for the future,” said Poet Laureate Matthew Graham. “Once again, the archive reflects the rich and diverse creative spirit of Indiana. I am especially pleased to see the inclusion of younger voices represented by the Poetry Ourselves program."
Residents of Indiana are encouraged to submit poems to the archive annually between February 1 and April 30. To view the archive, click here.

Nonprofits interested in bringing an award-winning Indiana author to their community to speak or to give a writing workshop for a public audience can now apply for funds to cover speaking fees as a part of programs associated with the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Awards. Events can be in-person or virtual.
Indiana Humanities will select up to 30 host organizations for speaking engagements and up to 10 for writing workshops. The programs, open to public libraries, schools, churches, museums, community centers, prisons and other nonprofit organizations, are funded through the support of Glick Philanthropies.
The Indiana Authors Awards Speaker Program features winning and shortlisted authors from the 2020 round of the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Awards.
Application guidelines, a list of this year’s speaker participants, author bios and session overviews are available here. Organizations can select their top three author or topic choices and are matched by Indiana Humanities. The deadline to apply is Nov. 19.
In addition to paying the speakers’ fees, Indiana Humanities will provide participating organizations with resources such as a communications toolkit, press release template and graphics for social media promotion. Participating organizations are responsible for working with authors to schedule engagements and cover any travel expenses. Author events must be completed by Dec. 31, 2022.

The latest medley of poems from established and rising Hoosier poets are now available in the INverse Poetry Archive. The archive celebrates and preserves the works of Indiana poets for future generations. Launched in 2019, the collection is a collaboration between the Indiana Poet Laureate, the Indiana Arts Commission and the Rare Books and Manuscripts Division of the Indiana State Library.
The poems themselves represent a diverse range of experiences, viewpoints and styles whose creators hail from many different generations and walks of life, but all are “Hoosier.” In honor of Halloween, enjoy this spooky poem by Rachel L. Bobo-Milburn of Frankfort.
Haunted Intimate and warm, my home appears, I am alone. Eyes from pictures smile and stare, Empty. Narrow and long, windows open to a yard that is quiet. Dusk, the evening smells of pine. Unlit room as the late sun is sinking, sinking. Shadows grow dark and tall. The room is silent. Upstairs, the sound of muffled footsteps and voices. Music, but from where? Black and blank my house has become, A Presence approaches, Slowly, Slowly, Closer, Closer, Suffocating. I am alone. Dark and lonely, the house is consumed with malice.
