The Midwest Collaborative for Library Services, in collaboration with a group of Indiana academic and school librarians, has launched a program to support librarians and media specialists in creating new information literacy materials that educators and librarians can use to teach students through INSPIRE. A lifelong learning library for Hoosiers provided by the Indiana State Library, INSPIRE consists of a rich set of databases available for free to Indiana residents.
MCLS's collaborative effort has several goals: to spark Indiana school librarians, media specialists and academic librarians to create educational materials that teachers and librarians can use to deliver information literacy instruction to high school and college students using INSPIRE resources; to provide librarians and media specialists an opportunity to review the educational materials that are created as a part of this program; and to support material creators in disseminating their work at relevant conferences.
MCLS is offering funds for this program to provide $500 stipends to up to ten Indiana school librarians, media specialists and academic librarians to create educational materials; to provide $250 stipends for up to ten librarians and media specialists to review the materials that are created for this program and provide feedback to creators before materials are posted online; and to provide $250 travel grants for up to ten creators to present about their work at a conference.
Literacy materials in standard formats such as text, graphics or video, as well as filetypes that are usable in or via standard web browsers, such as Chrome, are acceptable.
The proposal submission deadline is Friday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. Eastern. Click here to submit a proposal. Click here to apply to review materials. Click here to view additional information, including important program dates and best practices for educational materials submission.
Please contact MCLS executive director Scott Garrison with any questions.
On Saturday, Oct. 9 from 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m., the Central Indiana DNA Interest Group, in partnership with the Indiana State Library, will present "Using DNA to Explore Genetic Relationships." This free virtual workshop will focus on effectively using DNA to better understand genetic relationships and to solve genealogical mysteries.
Speakers from CIDIG will explore research methodology and tools, such as AncestryDNA® groups, in addition to examining ThruLines™, Lucidchart and DNAPainter to analyze DNA matches, organize results and create genetic networks. Using the Zoom chat feature, attendees will be able to submit questions during the sessions and during the panel discussion at the end of the program.
Sessions include "Visualizing Your DNA Matches with Your Family Tree," presented by Angela Guntz; "Do’s and Don’ts for Using DNA as Proof," presented by Ann Raymont; and "Examining DNA Results for Unknown Parentage," presented by Steven Frank.
This workshop is eligible for three LEUs for Indiana library staff.

Sept. 17-23 is recognized as Constitution Week in the United States. Each September, federal depository libraries across the nation celebrate Constitution Day with special events, library displays and promotion via websites and social media. Constitution Day and Citizenship Day commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. While the anniversary of the signing is recognized yearly, it was not until 2004 that it was enacted as an official holiday.
On Constitution Day, the Indiana State Library will have pocket U.S. Constitutions - in English and Spanish - that can be used for children's activity sheets, word search printouts and crosswords. These will be free to take and enjoy. Educators looking for fun activities to help promote constitution and citizenship awareness can find a wealth of resources from government agencies like the National Archives, Department of Education or the U.S. Courts. Ben’s Guide to the U.S. Government is another excellent resource offered by GPO that helps improve government literacy. Visitors can stop by the Indiana State Library to pick up a pocket U.S. Constitution and test their knowledge on the constitution and U.S. citizenship.
