The Indiana Arts Commission announced that it has awarded $3,038,223 to 390 nonprofits to fund arts projects and organizations around the state through the Arts Project Support and Arts Organization Support grant programs.
During its June 25 Quarterly Business Meeting, the Commission approved the funding recommendations for the two grant programs. Applications were reviewed by 167 Hoosiers from around the state with expertise in arts, community development and finance.
"The projects and organizations that are receiving funding have major positive impacts on the cultural, economic and educational climate of Indiana," said Alberta Barker, chair of the Indiana Arts Commission. "The Commission is impressed at the work being done around the state and is excited to support investment in Hoosier communities."
As a part of this investment, the commission awarded $1,000 merit awards to 52 organizations receiving Arts Organization Support to recognize their innovation and dedication to providing public benefit in the last year.
Five Indiana libraries received grants from the Commission. The Charlestown-Clark County Public Library received an Arts Project Support grant in the amount of $4,925; the Flora-Monroe Township Public Library received an Arts Project Support grant in the amount of $1,940; the Johnson County Public Library received an Arts Project Support grant in the amount of $4,290; and the Morgan County Public Library received an Arts Project Support grant in the amount of $3,200. The first monthly payments of the Child Tax Credit were issued on July 15. Parents will receive monthly payments from July to December, which total half the credit amount and will claim the other half on their 2021 income tax return. Payments will either be directly deposited to a bank account or mailed to a residence. The monthly amount for children age 5 and under is up to $300 per child, and up to $250 per child for children ages 6 to 17. It is important to note that these changes apply to the 2021 tax year only.
Prior to 2021, families could claim a credit up to $2,000 per child under the age of 17. This year, Congress increased the credit to $3,000 for children ages 6 to 17 and $3,600 for children under age 6. Hoosiers who filed tax returns for 2019 or 2020, or received a stimulus check from the IRS, will get this tax relief automatically. Low-income families who did not make enough to be required to file taxes in 2020 or 2019 can also get this benefit through the Non-filer Sign-up Tool.
The IRS created two new online tools to help families with understanding and managing the Child Tax Credit: Advance Child Credit Eligibility Assistant and Child Tax Credit Update Portal. The agency also created a FAQ page that covers more questions and topics. Additionally, the White House has created Child Tax Credit Explainer for ease of understanding the program.
On June 28, the second anniversary of the death of beloved library patron and philanthropist Delores “Dee” (Brown) Galbreath, the Pulaski County Public Library announced the opening of a newly-renovated local history room in her honor. Galbreath was a co-founder of Galbreath, Inc. and Galfab, Inc.
Made possible by a financial gift from Steve and Debbie Galbreath to the library, the new local history room pays homage to Galbreath in both design and meaning.
“The generous donation from the Galbreath family honors Steve’s late mother by incorporating many themes from Dee’s loving home,” stated MacKenzie Ledley, executive director of Pulaski County Public Library. “Working with an architect, we sought to recreate the comforting feeling of Dee’s home - especially those found in her living room and kitchen.”
Visitors to the local history room will first pass through a paned glass door that is a near replica of one of the home’s dining room doors. The room’s baseboard, ceiling and trim are exact replicas of the home’s woodwork, and the study tables have been crafted based on the inlay pattern of the home’s doors.
“The Galbreath and Brown families were early settlers in Pulaski County and have been an integral part of its history and success,” Ledley added. “This makes the history room a perfect place to house the library’s extensive collection of genealogical holdings, including the Galbreath and Brown genealogies, along with over 4,500 items available to interested researchers.”
In addition to the library’s digital resources, the renovated space will also feature an updated microfilm reader and include genealogical items from the library’s physical collection.
Forthcoming additions to the room include window treatments and a built-in bookcase. “We are also working with the Galbreath Family Foundation to develop a space in the room to provide a rotating display of Dee’s antique collection,” Ledley added.
The library is located at 121 S. Riverside Dr. in Winamac.
