The works of Harry H. Coburn

coburn

Harry Humbert Coburn was an Indianapolis commercial photographer and one of the first Hoosier videographers. He captured several significant events in the Circle City during the early 20th century, including the 1913 flood, World War I home front happenings and early celebrations of beloved local poet, James Whitcomb Riley.

The "Great Flood of 1913" occurred in the midwestern United States when major rivers flooded from runoff and several days of heavy rain during March 23-26, 1913. In Indiana, the flooding of the White, Ohio and Wabash rivers wreaked havoc in the communities along the rivers' banks. In Indianapolis, the White River's flooding devastated the city's west side, when the Morris Street levee broke on March 25th of that year and approximately 10-15 feet of water swept over entire neighborhoods. Around 4,000 families in west Indianapolis, mostly working class, were impacted by the flood. The photograph above, taken by Coburn, shows a flooded Riverside Amusement Park with its rollercoaster and buildings partially submerged. Coburn documented waterlogged houses and collapsed structures during the flood and its aftermath in his photographs.

Coburn also recorded the local activities related to the first world war in Indianapolis, which can be seen in his compilation film and still photographs. He captured troops training at Fort Benjamin Harrison and the visit of two French officials in 1917; war bond drives on Monument Circle in 1918; and Welcome Home Day scenes on May 7, 1919 to greet and cheer Indiana’s heroes. Coburn also filmed moments from the building of the Indiana World War Memorial, including the relocation of the Haugh Hotel in 1926, the cornerstone laying attended by General Pershing in 1927, and the construction of the memorial itself.

These images and more are online to explore in the Indiana State Library's Digital Collections.
