"Mental Maintenance," the next installment of the Indiana State Library's What's Up Wednesday series, will take place virtually on April 28 from 10-11 a.m.
Now more than ever, keeping one's emotional well-being afloat can mean the difference between surviving and thriving, and not just at work. "Mental Maintenance," presented by Jeremy Bolom, assistant director and head of public service at the Lincoln Parish Library in Ruston, Louisiana, will address issues related to mindfulness and self-care.
Drawing from various sources and personal experiences, including both successes and failures, Bolom will share how one hot-headed and persnickety librarian found a slice of inner peace - and can even sleep at night. Ideas and examples for self-care and stress management will be presented, and handouts will include an extensive bibliography. This session asks tough questions and addresses the stress in everyone's lives; however, it is not intended to replace professional care or advice.
The webinar is eligible for one LEU for Indiana library staff, which will be available for download following the session. Click here to read more and click here to register.
On Monday, April 12, Indiana Humanities launched Bookmark Indy, a one-of-a-kind exploration of Indianapolis's rich literary culture through the eyes of the writers who called the city home.
The Bookmark Indy website allows readers to explore a new neighborhood or get a new view of a neighborhood from the perspective of authors like Adrian Matejka, Mari Evans, Kurt Vonnegut and more. The 19 selected neighborhoods showcase the authors behind some of Indianapolis's greatest stories. Bookmark Indy highlights the literary inspiration behind each chosen location in addition to featuring the voices of the city's literary past and present, contemporary artists, scholars and community members.
Suzanne Walker, children's librarian in the Indiana Young Readers Center at the Indiana State Library, lends her voice to the Jacob Klein Bakery and General Store entry in the form of a short essay. The store served as inspiration for author Johnny Gruelle, who grew up just across the street and created the beloved Raggedy Ann character.
Bookmark Indy also provides details about each location, including map coordinates and tips on traveling to visit each site.
The project was funded with the support of Lilly Endowment Inc., The Herbert Simon Family Foundation, Rachel Simon, the Arthur Jordan Foundation and The National Bank of Indianapolis. Click here to view the Bookmark Indy brand video.
On Thursday, April 22 at 2 p.m., the Indiana State Library, in partnership with the Indiana Geographic Information Council, will present "GIS in the 1700s! Indiana's Historic Land Record Field Notes Digitized into Online Maps," a webinar detailing the digitization of historic field notes of Indiana surveyors from the late 1700s and mid-1800s.
The interdisciplinary digitization project involves Indiana history and historical government documents and features new geographic information system technology.
The webinar will be presented by Lorraine Wright, geographic information system analyst and owner of Rock Solid GIS. Wright will explain the details of deciphering the surveyors’ original handwritten field notes and land plats; how she researched missing information; and how she attached the documents to the online map for the public to view. Before the presentation, attendees can explore Wright's ESRI story map online by clicking here.
The webinar is eligible for one general LEU for Indiana library staff. Click here to read more and click here to register.

Welcome to the Government Information Minute. Every other week, government information librarians at the Indiana State Library cover current resources on governmental data at the state, national and international levels, all to keep the public well-informed. Follow the Indiana State Data Center on Facebook and Twitter and feel free to leave comments and suggestions.
The Access to Public Records Act, Indiana Code 5-14-3, was enacted to permit the citizens of Indiana broad and easy access to public records. To help citizens efficiently navigate access to government information, the Indiana Public Access Counselor provides the online publication Handbook on Indiana’s Public Access Laws that explains both APRA and also Indiana open door law for meetings of governing bodies.
There are a variety of Indiana public records available to search and access online. The Indiana Gateway for Local Government Units website collects and provides access to information about how taxes and other public dollars are budgeted and spent by Indiana's local units of government, including public employee compensation. The Indiana Transparency Portal contains information ranging from agency budgets to state contracts and agency performance measures.
Search mycase.in.gov for family, civil, criminal and appellate court records that are not confidential. If the document isn't available online, contact the clerk's office in the county where the case is being heard for information on how to get a copy of the document. Note that mycase does not include records for all courts in Indiana, and how far back the records go varies by county. It is also possible to search protection orders, guardianship cases, child abuse registry and other collections at on the state's public courts portal. Learn more about other types of public records and how to request them.
Public records on specific professions are also available online. The Roll of Attorneys search tool, provided by the Appellate Clerk, is a listing of all attorneys licensed to practice law in Indiana. The Professional Licensing Agency has a free search and verify online service for all Indiana professional license holders. The Indiana Department of Education’s Educator License Lookup database contains teaching assignments and is based on data submitted to the IDOE by Indiana school corporations.
The Indiana State Library, in partnership with the Resource Sharing Committee and the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services, has scheduled a virtual dialogue on the topic of resource sharing in Indiana on May 6 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
The dialogue will include a guided discussion on the past, present and future of resource sharing. The State Library will also share the latest resource sharing updates. The webinar also aims to generate ideas for a larger resource sharing conference to be held later in 2021.
The session is eligible for two LEUs for Indiana library staff. Click here to register.
