InLLA applications due this weekend

inlla

Applications for the 2021 Indiana Library Leadership Academy are due this Sunday, Feb. 28 by 4 p.m. This year's academy will be held virtually between April and August. The program includes seven 90-minute leadership sessions.

The Indiana Library Leadership Academy targets employees from public, academic, school and special libraries within Indiana who have exhibited leadership potential, a successful work experience and a dedication to the profession. There is no MLS/MLIS requirement for participation. At the end of this program, participants will recognize and understand the relevance of core skills of leadership and its intersection with management; develop a network of library professionals; and implement an individual project applicable to their own library over the course of the year. Approximately six leaders from the Indiana library community will be invited to act as coaches.

Applicants must submit an application containing contact information, responses to the application questions, a project idea, two professional references and a signed statement of commitment. A resume is also required as a separate document. Submitted documents must be in .doc or .pdf form. Applications will be reviewed by members of the Indiana State Library’s Professional Development Committee. The registration fee for those accepted into the program is $100. Click here to read more about the InLLA. Click here and scroll down to find a link to the application.

Please send applications to Kara Cleveland, Professional Development Office supervisor at the Indiana State Library.

Avon-Washington Township Public Library to host grant-funded Comic Con

comic

On March 1-7, the Virtual Will Eisner Memorial Comic Book Convention at the Avon-Washington Township Public Library will offer attendees a full week of graphic novel and pop culture celebration. The con is a fun, free and family-friendly online event that brings together fans and creators - old and young - in celebrating the importance of stories and fandoms that connect people and enrich their lives. The event is dedicated to Will Eisner, the father of the graphic novel, who  is considered one of the most important contributors to the development of sequential art.

Highlighting graphic literature, sequential art and comics as a literary medium, the conference includes a virtual expo hall featuring local and regional artists, authors, cosplayers, crafters and media creators. Presentations and chats give attendees an opportunity to deep dive into topics of interest; fandom meetups provide opportunities to discuss favorite characters and meet others with similar passions; and everyone can take part in our virtual cosplay and art contests as well as a month-long graphic novel reading challenge.

In 2020, the Avon-Washington Township Public Library was chosen as a recipient of the American Library Association's Will Eisner Graphic Novel Grant for Libraries - Growth Grant. The objective of the grant is to facilitate library-generated programs and services that will promote graphic novels to library patrons and to the local community. The convention is fully-funded by the grant.

General summer reading 2021 roundtable discussion scheduled

ISLLogo

On Tuesday, March 9 from 1-2:30 p.m., the Indiana State Library will host "Summer Reading 2021 Roundtable," a discussion about summer reading programs across the state.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their questions, concerns, ideas and anything else related to summer reading in 2021 to the discussion. The roundtable will offer participants an opportunity to crowdsource answers and suggestions from their peers as the landscape for this year's summer reading programs comes into focus.

Beth Yates of the Indiana State Library will facilitate the discussion, but the roundtable will be driven by participants and the materials they share and discuss.

All Indiana public library staff who touch summer reading programs are welcome, including but not limited to organizers and frontline staff serving any age groups. Discussion will not be limited to the Collaborative Summer Library Program, or their 2021 "Tails and Tales" theme, and will cover all aspects of summer reading. Anyone involved in summer reading programs is welcome to join the discussion.

The roundtable is eligible for one LEU for Indiana library staff holding a standard five-year certification. Click here to register and for more information.

Please contact Beth Yates, children's consultant at the Indiana State Library, with any questions about the "Summer Reading 2021 Roundtable."

Ayrograms from the L. S. Ayres department store

Ayrograms

Founded in 1872 by Lyman S. Ayres, the original L. S. Ayres department store was located on Washington Street in downtown Indianapolis. The well-known brown-brick building at Washington Street and Meridian Street was first occupied in 1905. That building doubled in size by 1915 due to the popularity of the store. Over time, L. S. Ayres became known for its women's fashions under the slogan “That Ayres Look;” the very popular Tea Room, known for its chicken velvet soup; holiday events and displays; and the basement budget store. With the growth of suburbia, Ayres branched out to new shopping centers in several Indiana cities and created Ayr-Way, its discount store. Eventually, Ayres was acquired and sold, over time, to various companies, with the Ayres name finally being retired in 2006.

The company’s newsletter, Ayrograms, was published monthly from 1920 to 1976, by and for the employees of L. S. Ayres and Company. Issues from 1943 to 1952 can be found in the Indiana State Library’s Digital Collections. Each issue contains articles, photographs about employees and their families and information about the latest fashions, upcoming sales and special promotions, such as the November 1950 Rose Show. The newsletter also contained information on the activities of various departments, such as draperies, advertising or displays, along with general information about the company, providing such material as employee insurance and benefit plans. Employees were encouraged to submit news at the publication’s office or by telephone. During and after World War II, news of the war and a focus on soldiers with connections to the company or its employees became prevalent in each issue.

ILF to launch 2021 We Love Our Library campaign in April

library

On April 1, the Indiana Library Federation will launch its 2021 We Love Our Library campaign. The campaign is a way to celebrate the importance of libraries.

April is a significant month for libraries. On April 4-10, the entire country will celebrate National Library Week. With its roots dating back more than six decades, National Library Week was first sponsored by the American Library Association in 1958 with its inaugural theme of "Wake up and Read!" Today, National Library Week acts as a way to "celebrate all that libraries and librarians contribute to our society and promote the use and support of public libraries."

Beginning April 1, ILF encourages everyone to post/tweet a selfie - or a picture of family or library staff- with a We Love Our Library sign or sticker across Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #WeLoveOurLibrary.

To enhance the experience, ILF has created graphics for everyone to download, use and share. For use on Facebook, there are two profile picture frames available. ILF has also created two We Love Our Library themed graphics to share. One graphic has a white background and the other has a transparent background. ILF does request that, for the sake of consistency, those celebrating in April use the provided graphics with no altered fonts or text. However, adding a library logo to either design is acceptable in order to make it more personalized for specific library communities.

While the celebration doesn't start until April 1, ILF encourages users to share the graphic at any time, but especially during the entire month of April.

Click here to download the graphics and to read more about the We Love Our Library campaign.
