“Wake Up, Woods” chosen as Indiana’s National Book Festival title

woods

Every year, a list of books for children and youth representing the literary heritage of the 50 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands is distributed by the Library of Congress’ Center for the Book during the National Book Festival, which takes place annually in Washington, D.C. Indiana’s selection is always by an Indiana author and usually includes other Indiana connections, like being set in Indiana or celebrating Indiana’s culture and heritage.

The 2020 National Book Festival selection from Indiana is “Wake Up, Woods,” written by Michael A. Homoya and Shane Gibson, illustrated by Gillian Harris and published by Rubber Ducky Press,

“Wake Up, Woods” pairs informational text with clever verses to inform and delight the reader about plants native to North American forests. “Wake Up, Woods” is not only written and illustrated by Hoosiers, but each of the plants highlighted in the book are native to Indiana and can be found in the spring time in parks and preserves – and even in shade gardens around yards. Detailed illustrations, lilting verses and scientific explanations make “Wake Up, Woods” an important text for anyone wanting to wake up to the wonder around them when visiting the woods. This is an excellent nature book to share with young readers and is perfect for the classroom, or to tuck in a backpack before a hike.

Plainfield library to raise money on Giving Tuesday for nursing nook

giving

The Friends of the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library will be raising money next month on Giving Tuesday with the goal of purchasing a nursing nook for the library. This lactation suite will allow mothers to pump and nurse in a private, clean space.

Giving Tuesday, held on Dec. 3 this year, is a global day of giving where people are encouraged to donate to causes that benefit their community. The library hopes to kick off the nursing nook fundraising with a $1,000 goal by challenging 200 people to donate $5 on Giving Tuesday. The library will have a box set up on Dec. 3 to collect donations. The community is also welcome to donate online through the "Help the Plainfield Library Get A Nursing Nook" Go Fund Me page.

Please contact Joanna Sproull, community liaison at the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library, with any questions or for more information on the Giving Tuesday event.

Frankfort library holds 39th annual art sale

glass

On Nov. 8-10, the Frankfort Community Public Library held their 39th Annual Fine Art Exhibition & Sale, "The Gem City." The library showcased over 80 local and regional artists in a variety of mediums including painting, printmaking, ceramics, photography, jewelry, woodworking, textiles, mixed media and glass. A portion of sales went to the Friends of the Frankfort Library, who sponsor children’s arts programming at the library.

Attendees who had pledged to spend $60 or more over the course of the weekend event were designated Art Show Patrons. Art Show Patrons were also invited to the opening reception on Friday evening.

This year's show also featured accomplished jewelry maker Deborah Waymire, who has studied with national and international glass masters and has been a member of the Indiana Bead Society, the International Society of Glass Beadmakers, and the Indiana Society of Lampworkers and Art Glass Artists.

This year's event raised $9,000 and was made possible by the Indiana Arts Commission, the Tippecanoe Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities and the 2020 census

census2

The Indiana Governor’s Council for People with Disabilities invited the Indiana State Library to its conference last week to help promote the 2020 census. During the conference, the library received this question many times: "What does the Indiana State Library have to offer people with disabilities?"

The most obvious answer to the question would be the library's Talking Book and Braille Library. Operating in partnership with the National Library Service at the Library of Congress, ISL’s Talking Book and Braille Library provides free braille and talking book library service for people with temporary or permanent low vision, blindness or a physical disability that prevents them from reading or holding the printed page.

Other answers to the question are more difficult to pinpoint. The state library routinely serves patrons with disabilities. However, patrons are under no legal obligation to disclose a disability, and staff may not know that a patron has a disability when they approach the public service desk. Regardless of whether a patron identifies as disabled or not, all patrons to the Indiana State Library receive the same steadfast commitment to customer service, and the attitude that whomever approaches the public service desk as a patron deserves good customer service.

Additionally, the library offers:

 - Awareness that communication with library staff may require additional services - an interpreter, a social worker or other assistance - nevertheless, the library will try its best to determine what a patron’s question is and how to help them answer it.

 - Assurance that when someone uses the Indiana State Library as a member of the public, they have the right to be there and to request information.

The same should follow for outreach about the 2020 census:

 - Those with disabilities deserve the same commitment to customer service from library when filling out the 2020 census.

 - Additional communication tools and technology should be provided to people with disabilities in order to help fill out the census.

 - People with disabilities have the right to be counted in the census.

For those who participate in a community that serves people with disabilities, please keep these ideas in mind as the 2020 census appears in mailboxes next year.

Pike County library genealogy department awarded $10,000 LSTA digitization grant

imls

The Pike County Public Library's genealogy department recently received a Library Services and Technology Act grant in the amount of $10,000 for the purchase of a flatbed scanner to digitize its Veterans Collection. Items in the collection include Civil War-era artifacts and record books from the Grand Army Republic, medals from veterans, World War scrapbooks, photos and other one-of-a kind artifacts. As part of the grant, the collection will be hosted by Indiana State Library’s Indiana Memory digital repository, which will allow greater access to the library's genealogy collection.

“This grant enables us to fulfill our library’s mission of preserving Pike County’s history,” said Pike County Public Library Director Stephanie Rawlins.

This project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered by the Indiana State Library.

For future updates on the project, please visit the library's Facebook page.
