The Otterbein Public Library is celebrating its 100th year of serving the community with an open house and reception on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. The library will recognize and thank community partners who have donated and volunteered their services.
The community is invited to join the historic celebration, which will be filled with storytelling, guest speakers, library memorabilia and all-ages activities.
"Otterbein Public Library's mission is to provide programs, services and materials that meet the personal, educational and professional needs of the entire community. We are excited to express that we've been doing exactly that for the past 100 years. A lot has changed since 1919; the building, the technology and patron needs, but OPL's dedication to the community hasn't wavered. We can't wait to celebrate a century of achievements with our community and share our goals for the next 100 years," said Addie Farmer, librarian and program coordinator.
"I am grateful for OPL. My life is enriched by the programs offered, and I am able to access a wide variety of resources for professional and personal research. I appreciate the amazing staff who approach work with a positive attitude and approachability. Their commitment to remaining relevant in an ever-evolving world of information and technology is impressive. Without the library, Otterbein would be devoid of a vivacious, stimulating, and valuable resource," said library patron Brooke Criswell.
The Otterbein Public Library is located at 23 East First St. in Otterbein.
Since 2003, the Maring-Hunt Library, part of the Muncie Public Library system, has managed a community garden. A plethora of grants, including a Ball State University Immersive Learning Project grant and a Lowe’s Grant for Neighborhood Improvement, allowed for the construction of the Gateway to Gardening Pavilion at Maring-Hunt Library in 2017.
Since the pavilion's grand opening, the community space has added a kitchen pavilion, a learning and market pavilion, a reading nook, nature play pockets, a sand play pocket, a bioswale with native Indiana plants and public and private garden areas.
The garden allows community members access to fresh produce. For a small annual fee, patrons can rent and tend to their own plots. Courtney Brown, Southeast regional coordinator at the Indiana State Library, recently visited the garden.
"I was really impressed with what the library built for their community. In addition to the rented plots, the library also provides a small free garden with produce available to those in need. I’m excited to see the final phase of the project, a soft surface wellness trail around the garden property," Brown said.
The project was designed and built by Ball State University students and their faculty mentor, Dr. Pam Harwood. Click here for more information about the Gateway to Gardening Pavilion.
The Indiana State Library would like to remind InfoExpress users about four state holidays in November that will disrupt regularly-scheduled courier service. Service will not be available on Tuesday, Nov. 5, General Election Day; Monday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day; Thursday, Nov. 28, Thanksgiving; and Friday, Nov. 29, the observation of Lincoln's birthday.
Libraries receiving only one to two days of service per week may request alternate pickup days for the service dates affected by state holidays. This must be done at least 48 hours in advance, and only one day per week may be rescheduled. Users can submit rescheduling requests by logging into their InfoExpress account, opening “User Profile” and selecting “Days Unavailable.” Enter the date of the holiday or closure under “New Unavailable Date,” or select “More Than One Day,” if applicable, and provide a requested replacement date. The state library will follow up if NOW Courier is unable to accommodate the requested replacement date.
Please contact the InfoExpress coordinator with any questions.

Tuesday, Nov. 5 is municipal Election Day in Indiana. For persons residing within cities and towns, it will be their opportunity to vote for candidates for the offices of mayor, city council member, city clerk or city clerk-treasurer, judge of city court, town council member, town clerk-treasurer and town court judge. Some local public questions will appear on the ballot in certain counties. It is possible that voters who live outside a city or town could still be eligible to vote only on the public questions. For example, if a school corporation has a referendum, all voters residing within the school district boundaries may vote “yes” or “no” on the public question.
Use the Indiana voter portal to check the status of your voting registration, learn “who and what is on my ballot” and find out the times and poll locations. After the polls close and counties begin reporting the vote totals, one may view election results on the Indiana Secretary of State’s website. While the voter registration deadline for the 2019 municipal election was Oct. 7, there is still time to plan ahead and register to vote in the 2020 primary and general elections.
Please note that the Indiana State Library will be closed on Tuesday, Nov. 5 for Election Day.
The Indiana African American Genealogy Group will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a luncheon on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 12-3 p.m., at the Fay Biccard Glick Neighborhood Center at Crooked Creek.
Special guest and speaker will be Curt B. Witcher, senior manager of special collections at the Allen County Public Library. Witcher recently received the Indiana Historical Society's Eli Lilly Lifetime Achievement Award. Music will be provided by Carl Hines.
The registration fee for non-members is $25 and the registration fee for IAAGG members is $2o. For further information about the luncheon and to register, please visit the IAAGG website.
The Fay Biccard Glick Neighborhood Center at Crooked Creek is located at 2990 W. 71st St. in Indianapolis.
