As part of a partnership with Purdue Extension, the Indiana State Library proudly announces the opportunity for 15 public library employees to attend the Technology Academy. The academy will consist of six training sessions to be held at the Indiana State Library in Indianapolis, beginning on Jan. 10, 2020. Purdue Extension service staff will provide the training sessions once a month during the six-month duration of the academy. Participants in the Technology Academy will be selected in a competitive application process.
The purpose of the Technology Academy is to improve public library service in Indiana by developing technology skills of public library staff; to assist public library system directors in training public library staff; and to motivate public library staff to acquire, maintain and develop skills for personal professional fulfillment and career enhancement. Through lectures, discussions and assignments, participants will examine basic computer concepts and skills, basic internet concepts and skills, various internet resources, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, social media, Cloud Services including Dropbox and Google Docs, multiple databases including INSPIRE, eBooks and how to deliver and communicate technology assistance to patrons.
To be considered for participation, applicants must be nominated by their library system director. If the applicant is a director, the application must be approved by the board president. Individuals employed full-time or part-time in an Indiana public library one calendar year prior to Nov. 1, 2019 and who possess limited computer skills, and would like to improve those skills to more effectively deliver library services, are qualified to be nominated.

The Private Academic Library Network Inc. recently worked with The IDEA Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving student learning in higher education, to create a freely-available assessment survey, focused on the educational role and institutional effectiveness of the library. The results of the "Assessment of Library Impact and Value" survey provide insights on how to best implement improvements, allocate resources and communicate with campus stakeholders at PALNI institutions. PALNI created the survey with the intention of making it open access and available for use and remixing by other institutions.
While there are several tools already available to assess library value, they are often cost prohibitive for smaller institutions. In response to this cost issue, PALNI convened a group to create a low-cost tool to assess user needs and behaviors to help libraries develop a strategy to improve and demonstrate effectiveness, relevance and value of libraries to home institutions.
“After administering the survey at each of our schools and seeing the results from the other PALNI participants, as well as the aggregated data for PALNI, we believe that we are on track to address our purpose of measuring our effectiveness and informing our faculty and administrators,” said task force member and Grace College Library Director Tonya Fawcett.
The current aggregated PALNI report can be found here. Click here to read the full PALNI press release.

The fall 2019 Federal Depository Library Conference is fast approaching. The two-and-half day conference, taking place on Oct. 21-23 in Washington D.C., is the largest annual gathering of federal depository librarians and colleagues in the country. This year’s keynote presenter is Dr. Trevor Owens, head of digital content management for library services at the Library of Congress. The conference is free to attend. For those unable to travel to the conference, sessions will be made available virtually.
DLC 2019 provides an opportunity to learn about the newest resources and services available regarding federal government information, as well as a chance to hear firsthand accounts of library projects or initiatives. This year’s conference includes sessions on collection shifting, weeding, digitization and experiences as a preservation steward; just to name a few. The Government Publishing Office hosts two conferences every year, but the fall conference is the only in-person event. Subscribe to FDLP News & Events to receive information on upcoming events and webinars.
