Poetry Out Loud is now accepting commitments from Indiana schools to participate in the 2019-20 recitation process. Schools can learn more about the competition and access the school registration form on the Indiana State Library website. School sign-ups will be open until Dec. 13, 2019.
Initial competitions are held at the high school level to determine one student to represent the school in state final competition on Feb. 15, 2020, at the Indiana State Library. Local competitions must be judged by the same criteria used in the state and national events.
The state champion receives a $200 cash prize and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete in the Poetry Out Loud National Finals in April. The state champion's school receives a $500 stipend to purchase poetry books.
A total of $50,000 in scholarship awards and school stipends will be awarded at the Poetry Out Loud National Finals, with a $20,000 college scholarship awarded to the national champion.
Poetry Out Loud is a partnership between the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. The program encourages the study of great poetry by offering education materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high school students across the country.
The Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana State Library are partners in presenting the Indiana Poetry Out Loud competition. For more information about the competition, visit the state library’s Poetry Out Loud website. For general information about the national program and competition, visit the national Poetry Out Loud website.
For 50 years, the Cleo Rogers Memorial Library, the main branch of the Bartholomew County Public Library, has occupied the same building. On Oct. 16, 2019, beginning at 6 p.m., the public is invited to Library Plaza to celebrate a half century of the library. The building, which replaced the original Carnegie library, is named in honor of longtime librarian Cleo Rogers.
For several months, community members have been encouraged to share their memories of Rogers or of the library. During the celebration, these memories will be shared.
“We are going back to our roots,” said director Jason Hatton. "This includes the unveiling of a new 'old' logo during the celebration. Some in the community will recognize our new logo."
Along with the new logo, the library is moving to a new mission statement: “The Bartholomew County Public Library is the community crossroads - connecting people, information, ideas, and experiences to empower everyone on their journey of lifelong learning.” A new tagline, “Community Crossroads for Lifelong Learning,” has also been unveiled.
Columbus Mayor Jim Lienhoop will be on hand with a formal proclamation as a plaque will be dedicated to Rogers. Sen. Greg Walker and state Rep. Ryan Lauer will also speak.
Visit the library's events calendar for a schedule of the day's events, including walking tours, a doll-making workshop and the plaque dedication ceremony.
The public will also be able to purchase "Cleo Turns 50" t-shirts for $10 at the event.
The Indiana State Library would like to send out a brief reminder that there will be no InfoExpress service on Monday, Oct. 14, 2019 due to the observance of Columbus Day.
The rescheduling deadline has passed, but users may contact the InfoExpress coordinator for rescheduling instructions for future holidays or with any questions about their rescheduled service.
