Allen County Public Library celebrates Family History Month in October

allen

In October, the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center will celebrate Family History Month. Beginning on Oct. 2, 2019 with "Food For Thought: Recipes as Memoir" and ending on Oct. 31 with "Find My Past: A Tool for British, Irish, and American Ancestry," the Genealogy Center will present 19 programs, workshops and events covering topics such as family history, military veterans, working with single records, railroad pension records and more. The month's premier events will take place during the last weekend with "Midnight Madness Extended Research Hours" on Friday, Oct. 25, and the Allen County Genealogical Society’s “A Day with Judy Russell,” the Legal Genealogist, on Saturday, Oct. 26.

In addition to live events, the center will offer 23 short video tips on its social media accounts beginning on Oct. 1, meaning there’s something every single day to help celebrate Family History Month. Additionally, patrons can enjoy extended research hours and daily one-on-one genealogy consultations.

A complete list of events and video tips may be found here. Registration is recommended for all events. Follow the Allen County Public Library Genealogy Center on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram for the video tips. Call 260-421-1225 for more information.

Difference is You Award winner announced

DIY

Wendy Knapp, Judi Terpening, Holly Poling, conference organizer Kim Brown-Harden and Jacob Speer

At this year's The Difference is You library support staff conference, held on Friday, Sept. 13 at the Indiana State Library, Holly Poling was named the 2019 The Difference is You Award winner.

Poling, a library assistant from Jefferson County Public Library, was nominated by her director, Judi Terpening.

"Through one interaction at a time, Holly Poling makes a difference in our community. She is an  inspiration to our visitors as well as to staff. She goes out of her way to help others and to make them feel welcome. She is especially patient with visitors who find themselves in difficult situations or are frustrated with their plight, while making no judgment. There are many examples of Holly's service and not enough room to share them all," Terpening wrote in her nomination submission. She then shared stories of Poling surprising a detective-loving daughter of a struggling single dad with a spy kit; assisting a frustrated Vietnam veteran with home ownership research, which led to the formerly-trying patron to bring in donuts for the library staff; and helping a homeless man who was recently released from jail.

State Librarian Jacob Speer and Deputy Director of Statewide Services Wendy Knapp presented Poling with the award that recognizes library support staff who are an inspiration in their community.

Baby Safety Month and Tracking mosquito-borne illnesses

Baby Safety Month
September is Baby Safety Month. The Consumer Product Safety Commission urges everyone to use their resources to check for recalled baby and children’s products and to get the latest recall information. Those interested in receiving direct recall messages on children’s products may sign up in the newsroom. Additionally, consumers can use www.saferproducts.gov to report incidents or to search for incidents filed by other consumers. The CPSC recalls app at can be downloaded here. Take advantage of the recall remedy - repair, replace or refund - and remember that recalls don’t expire.

Tracking mosquito-borne illnesses
In a Sept. 12, 2019 press release, Indiana State Department of Health officials urged Indiana residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites in response to the detection of eastern equine encephalitis virus activity in northern Indiana. No human cases of the EEE virus disease have been reported in Indiana in 2019; however, three human cases have been reported in southwest Michigan this year, one of which was fatal. The ISDH Epidemiology Resource Center has more information about the EEE virus, West Nile and other mosquito-borne diseases, in addition to mosquito bite prevention tips. For maps showing recent infections in people, birds, horses and mosquitoes, click here. National statistics for EEEV disease can be found at the CDC EEEV statistics and maps webpage. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has additional information about mosquito-borne viruses present in other states and U.S. territories and precautions for travelers to certain areas. Learn about using repellent products to protect against mosquito-borne illnesses from the Environmental Protection Agency.

TeachingBooks website updated for new school year

tbooks

TeachingBooks, which can be accessed for free through the INSPIRE interface, is a resource for all things books - discussion questions, lesson plans, author information and more.

Earlier this year, TeachingBooks  updated its website with a new look and new searching functionality. To coincide with the updated site, TeachingBooks released six short tutorial videos throughout the summer: "TeachingBooks New Look Demo," "Searching on TeachingBooks," "Customizing TeachingBooks," "Instruct with TeachingBooks," "Access & Set up for TeachingBooks." and "Finding New Titles While Browsing."

While these short tutorials do not qualify for LEUs, TeachingBooks does have more in-depth webinars that could qualify if they are at least 31 minutes. Scroll to the bottom of this page for information on how to claim LEUs for archived webinars.
