The Indiana State Library is pleased to announce Ruth Frasur as Evergreen development and support administrator. This newly-created position, funded by Evergreen Indiana Libraries and the Evergreen International community, will see the administrator working with people around the state and country, providing training for Evergreen Indiana members on various aspects of the integrated library system. Additionally, she will coordinate the Evergreen Community Development Initiative. The development initiative is a collaboration between libraries and library consortia to pool resources and promote continued development of the Evergreen software.
Previously, Frasur was a branch manager for the Tippecanoe County Public Library, director of the Hagerstown-Jefferson Township Library and teen coordinator/assistant to the programming coordinator at the Union County Public Library. She's been in Indiana libraries since 2007 and received her Master of Library Science from Indiana University at the IUPUI campus in 2011. "Evergreen Indiana and the Evergreen ILS have been integral parts of my professional life since 2008, when UCPL went live as one of the pilot libraries for the consortium. Since then, I’ve served two terms on the Evergreen Indiana Executive Committee as well as one term on the Evergreen Oversight Board," Frasur said. "If anyone is interested in discussing why I believe open source software and the Evergreen community fit perfectly with the values of libraries, it’s a conversation I’m always willing to have."
Frasur can be reached at 317-460-7556 or via email.
On Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019 at 11 a.m., the Indiana State Library will host "Using Genetic Genealogy to Advance Your Research." The free workshop will focus on tips for advancing genealogy research using DNA testing. Topics will include: understanding the basics of genetic genealogy; analyzing DNA results and ethnicity estimates; utilizing AncestryDNA features; developing DNA research plans; and more. Central Indiana DNA Interest Group members will be available throughout the sessions to answer questions.
The workshop will include three sessions. Denise Anderson-Decina will present "What’s in Your DNA?," Angela Guntz will present "Using the New Features at AncestryDNA.com," and Ann Raymont will present "Do-It-Yourself DNA Case Studies."
Registration is required for this free workshop. Click here to register and to read session descriptions. Light snacks will be provided. Parking will be available in the Senate Avenue Parking Garage across the street from the library. The event is approved for three LEUs for Indiana librarians. The library is located at 315 W. Ohio St. in Indianapolis.
Please contact Jamie Dunn, supervisor of the Genealogy Division at the Indiana State Library, with any questions.
Due to a low supply of bags, the Indiana State Library is requesting that any excess InfoExpress bags be returned to the library as soon as possible in order to be able fulfill order requests for other libraries.
To return the bags, place them inside of an InfoExpress bag. A parcel label can be created and they may be shipped to the Indiana State Library, or a note can be taped in the window of the bag that says “Extra Bags” and NOW Courier will know to return them to the library.
Please contact InfoExpress with any questions.

The Federal Aviation Administration is challenging undergraduate and graduate students from across the county to develop innovative ways to utilize smart technology to improve the traveling experience. The agency is offering cash prizes totaling $25,000. The Department of Defense, NASA, Department of Energy and other federal agencies also have challenges with cash prizes. Maintained by the U.S. General Services Administration, Challenge.gov is the official hub for prize competitions and challenges for the federal government.
Challenge.gov allows the federal government to reach out to problem-solving citizens to crowdsource solutions in a competitive and prize-driven forum. Since 2010, the U.S. government has run nearly 1,000 challenges in more than 100 federal agencies. Longitude and ship navigation, Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight, initial designs for the U.S. Capitol and the White House were all products of open prize competitions. Government agencies continually issue challenges to the public, so be sure to routinely check in to see new competitions.
Filmgoers in Indiana will unite with over 100,000 other film lovers from around the world during the week of Sept. 26-Oct. 6, 2019 when the 22nd Annual MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival takes place at eight Hoosier libraries.
Ten movies will be screened during the week and attendees will become instant film critics, as each participant will be handed a ballot upon entry, allowing them to vote for Best Film and Best Actor.
Participating libraries include: Elkhart Public Library, Greentown Public Library, Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, Owen County Public Library, Pendleton Community Public Library, Plainfield Guilford-Township Public Library, Putnam County Public Library and Vigo County Public Library.
“We are very excited and proud to share these unique films in our community and to have the library be part of this global film festival,” said Mary Glaser, library and collection services manager at the Plainfield Guilford-Township Public Library. “We are hoping for large crowds and of course we will be serving popcorn.”
