The Private Academic Library Network of Indiana Inc. has awarded the 2019 PALNI Innovation Grant to Butler University for their proposal, "Making Cultural Heritage Artifacts into 3D Digital Objects using Photogrammetry." The grant aids initiatives that optimize library resources and services in ways that significantly expand the ability of supported organizations to support teaching and learning at PALNI institutions. Funded programs, projects and initiatives must align with PALNI strategic priorities and promote PALNI deep collaboration.
Butler’s interest in using photogrammetry to teach, preserve and give access to 3D special collection materials was cross-departmental between the library, the Center for Academic Technology and the Butler Art Committee. The photogrammetric process provides a non-contact approach to digitize materials by creating a 3D digital surrogate of an analog object via photography and special software. The project will increase access and allow for potential hands-on use of items found in Butler University’s art collection without risking damage to priceless items.
By the end of summer 2019, Butler will have at least 10 objects digitized and in the online collection. They are excited to scan more of the Butler Art Collection and potentially the Eliza Baker collection. All 3D scans can be found in Butler’s SketchFab portal and eventually fully integrated into CONTENTdm to be included in the library’s digital collections.

Welcome
to the Government Information Minute. Every week, government information
librarians at the Indiana State Library cover current resources on governmental
data at the state, national and international levels; all to keep the public
well-informed. Follow the Indiana State Data Center on Facebook and Twitter and feel free to leave comments
and suggestions.
Planning is underway for the next Government Information Day conference on May 14, 2020 at the Indiana State Library. The free one-day event is open to librarians and any researcher interested in learning about government information resources and trends. Indiana public librarians have the chance to earn up to four LEUs attending GID20. The planning committee encourages topic requests from interested librarians. Those with specific subjects or government resources of particular interest in mind can email Brent Abercrombie, planning committee chair and regional depository coordinator, with presentation topic suggestions.
The purpose of Government Information Day is to highlight resources that would better assist librarians and researchers in navigating government information sources. With the 2020 census and upcoming elections on the horizon, government information is more relevant than ever before. The GID20 planning committee wants to include the interested voices of the library community in the planning of the conference.
The Young Adult Library Services Association has announced the second cohort of its Train the Trainer project. The project is currently in its second year of implementation and is in partnership with the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies and generously funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
Cohort 2 is made up of 97 state library agency staff and front-line library staff. They will participate in the project’s updated 2.5 day training. Trainings will be held in October and November in three separate locations – Seattle, Sept. 28-30; Chicago, Oct. 27-29; and Memphis, Oct. 30-Nov. 1, just before YALSA’s 2019 Young Adult Services Symposium. Participants will build connected learning, computational thinking and equity skills so they can better serve and meet the learning needs of youth in their communities. Following the their own training, each participant will facilitate a minimum of 30 hours of training for library staff across their state. View the full list of participants.
In the third and final year of the project, a face-to-face summit featuring all cohort participants will take place in November 2020 in Reno, Nevada. At the summit, participants will discuss project successes and challenges and share resources that will help with the development of a resource database focused on CL and CT activities that will be shared as a free tool to the library community.
