The Union County Public Library is offering free wash days for Union County residents every Wednesday in August from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Liberty Laundry Mat on First Street in Liberty.
The Loads of Love Laundry Project allows library patrons to wash their clothes and bedding for free. The project is the idea of library board member Carol Reynolds McCashland, a retired teacher who spent 41 years teaching elementary school students. "Laundromats are an expense many can't afford. Children and adults experience a boost in self-esteem with clean clothing. People sleep better with clean linens. If we can help one family feel a bit more empowered, then we should pursue this program," McCashland said.
In order for someone to participate in the program they must present a current UCPL library card, bring their own laundry supplies and do their own laundry. The free washes include the use of either four-top load washers or two top-load washers and one extra-large-load washer per family. There is no limit on the amount of dryers that can be used.
"We started this yesterday [Aug. 7] and had 17 people do their laundry and use the maximum number of loads allowed. As a result of the requirement of having a current library card, we issued six new cards yesterday. I think next Wednesday will be even busier," said UCPL director Karen Kahl.
The project is sponsored by the Union County Friends of the Library.
On Sept. 20, 2019 at 9 a.m., the Indiana State Library will host "Beyond an Apple a Day: Providing Consumer Health Information at Your Library," a hands-on workshop that will cover the health information-seeking behavior of consumers and the role of the librarian in the provision of health information for the public.
Presented by Bobbi Newman, community engagement and outreach specialist with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, this workshop will offer an opportunity for participants to learn about the evolution of consumer health, health literacy and the e-patient. Attendees will gain knowledge of top consumer health sites, learn creative ideas for health information outreach, explore effective marketing approaches and develop an elevator speech.
The course is provided by the National Network of Libraries of Medicine and offers four CE hours from the Medical Library Association and four LEUs from the Indiana State Library. Click here to register and for additional information about the workshop.
Please contact Kara Cleveland of the Indiana State Library with any questions.
Indiana Humanities is currently seeking information from libraries regarding how they connect with contemporary Indiana authors.
"We're curious about everything from whether you regularly add new books by Indiana authors to your collection to how frequently, if at all, you host author visits or writing workshops," said a representative from Indiana Humanities.
Those interested in sharing this information may take a survey here. The survey should take between five and 10 minutes to complete.
Those who choose to complete the survey and identify themselves will be eligible to win a $25 Amazon gift card. The survey must be completed by Friday, Aug. 23, 2019 to be eligible for the gift card drawing.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website has information useful to practitioners in the fields of mental health and substance use disorders and people dealing with substance abuse or mental health issues. The website has pages covering practitioner training, data, news and programs. While practitioner training may be useful mostly for practitioners or researchers, the data, news and programs sections can be of use to nearly everyone.
The programs section includes information on programs detailing behavioral health equity, drug-free workplaces, evidence-based practices and resources, homelessness resources, a mental health awareness training grant, the national child traumatic stress initiative, school and campus health, the power of perceptions and understanding and underage drinking. People dealing with these issues can research which programs are best for their situation. They can also use the following links to find the nearest treatment locations: behavioral health treatment services, buprenorphine practitioner and treatment, early serious mental illness treatment and opioid treatment.
People who need to talk with someone about these subjects can call one of the following helplines: Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255); SAMHSA's National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357); Disaster Distress Helpline at 1-800-985-5990; Veteran's Crisis Line at 1-800-273-TALK (8255); or Drug-Free Workplace at 1-800-967-5752.
The Indiana State Library, on behalf of the Collaborative Summer Library Program, is currently seeking theme and slogan ideas for CSLP's 2023 summer reading early literacy program.
The library is looking for two suggestions for the 2023 summer reading campaign. The ideas should be thought provoking, exciting and accessible to all libraries. The state library will compile the top entries from Indiana and use them when voting for slogans and themes at the CSLP Annual Meeting for state representatives in September. Suggestions may be submitted here. The deadline for this survey is Friday, Aug. 30, 2019.
Past themes have included "Water," "Night," "Science," and "Heroes and Superheroes." The current theme is "A Universe of Stories," and upcoming themes are "Imagine Your Story" in 2020, "Tails and Tales" in 2021 and "All Together Now" in 2022. The 2023 artist will be Frank Morrison.
Please contact Beth Yates of the Indiana State Library with any questions.
