Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award nominations needed

firefly

The Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Committee is seeking nominations for the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award. The award is an initiative of the Indiana Center for the Book. This state accolade, administered by the committee, highlights picture books for young children. Picture books serve an important role in the first years of the life of a child. The purpose of this recognition is to encourage parents, caregivers and very young children to interact together with exceptional picture books.

Indiana library workers may nominate pictures book for the award from June through October 1 each year. The committee states, "That means that we need your nominations! Have you read a fun picture book in your storytime? Have a book that makes you laugh every time you read it? Noticed a popular picture book the kids are loving this summer?"

Those who work with youth, either in a school library or in a public library, are eligible to nominate as many titles as they wish. To nominate a book, send an email to the Indiana Center for the Book. Include in the email the title, author, illustrator and publication date of the book.

Criteria for book nominations are as follows:

• Must be published by July 1 of the current year, or any time in the previous year and still be in print. Currently, this ranges from Jan. 1, 2018 to July 1, 2019.
• Possess strong child appeal.
• Demonstrate three or more of the five practices of Every Child Ready to Read®: talking, singing, reading, writing and playing.
• Have artistic quality with text that supports the illustrations or a compelling narrative provided by illustrations.
• Diversity and inclusion are encouraged.

GPO and DPLA partnering to improve e-book access

gpo

The Government Publishing Office and the Digital Public Library of America have partnered to make government e-books more accessible. Government e-books will be accessible through Open Bookshelf and help GPO meet the needs of the 21st century researcher. Open Bookshelf can be downloaded to one’s Apple or Android device, allowing for greater ease in browsing digital content. There are currently over 500 government titles available on the Catalog of Government Publications. Through the partnership with DPLA, those titles will be integrated into larger and more widely-viewed collections within Open Bookshelf.

DPLA is an all-digital public library. Their library collection features millions of photographs, manuscripts, books, sounds, moving images and much more from libraries, archives and museums across the country. DPLA also includes primary source sets and online exhibits. The resource is very useful for educators, students, scholarly research, genealogists and life-long learners.
