Vermillion library featured in Hoosier Hardwood basketball photo blog

gym

Since 2013, photographers Chris Smith and Michael E. Keating have been documenting Indiana's historic high school gyms via The Hoosier Hardwood Photo Project. In a 2016 interview with the New York Times, Keating said of Indiana's fondness for the sport, "If basketball’s a religion, then the gymnasiums — they’re the places where people worship. They’re the churches, the temples.”

With over 50,000 miles logged, the duo has photographed more than 300 Hoosier gymnasiums. One such gym was found in a very unusual place: a library. In early July, HHPP visited the Vermillion County Public Library in Newport. Inside the high-school-turned-library is the one-time home court of the Newport Tigers, built in 1925.

According to VCPL director Misty Bishop, the court is functional and the library rents the space out for community, personal and patron usage. "The gym has been used for youth basketball camps, pickleball, and Queen pageants. The library uses the space for a variety of programming and every year the Newport High School Alumni have an annual dinner honoring past graduates and students." The library even circulates basketballs for use in the gym.

"We were really excited to share this experience and our building with HHPP, as it has brought a lot of positive feedback for the library and our community," Bishop added.

The Frankfort Community Public Library is excited to announce a visit from B.J. Austin, NASA Solar System Ambassador, on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 1 p.m. in the library's Skanta Theatre. Austin will speak about NASA’s first moon landing.

According the NASA Solar System Ambassador website, “B.J. Austin is the president of an aerospace propulsion research and development and engineering services firm focused on furthering space exploration and space commercialization through advanced propulsion system designs. Mr. Austin’s roles include modeling systems, developing propellant formations, designing combustion devices and analyzing test results. Mr. Austin is also the president of the Wabash Valley Astronomical Society located in West Lafayette, Indiana."

The library encourages everyone to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the moon landing by learning all about it from a real astronomer. Light snacks and punch will be served at the conclusion of the free, all-ages program.

The NASA Solar System Ambassador program strives to bring NASA missions and science to the public with the use of motivated, knowledgeable volunteers working in their own communities. The program currently has over 730 ambassadors in the 50 states, territories, and military bases. These ambassadors set up events throughout the country to inspire scientific learning and interest.

Wild Horse and Burro Program - Bureau of Land Management

burro

The Wild Horse and Burro Program, created by the Bureau of Land Management to implement the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act, works to ensure healthy herds on public range lands. These 26.9 million acres are spread across 10 western states. Without management, and in the absence of natural predators, the wild herds will quickly outgrow the land's ability to support them. Because of this, the Bureau of Land Management will, in some cases, use birth control to maintain the size of the herd, or conduct wild horse and burro gathers and removals. The horses and burros are then put up for adoption and if they aren’t adopted, put up for sale.

The Wild Horse and Burro Program website houses a wide range of data, including statistics about the program and information about the various aspects of herd health and management. There is a section about adopting a horse or burrow through the program, including an adoption and sale event schedule, the application, instructions on the online adoption process and success stories.

Those interested in wild horses and burros, as well as those looking into adoption, might find the Wild Horse and Burro Program website a useful place to start their research.
