Plainfield library cuts ribbon on StoryWalk

sw

On Monday, July 1, 2019, the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library cut the ribbon on their latest project, a brand new StoryWalk. The ceremony took place at Hummel Park in Plainfield, the location of the StoryWalk.

A StoryWalk presents a picture book page by page along a trail or path, which families read while moving from display to display. The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk is a registered service mark owned by Ferguson.

The library's StoryWalk begins at the playground and follows a trail toward the park's Splash Pad. The displays include a complete picture book with early literacy activities to enjoy together and a list of suggested books to read. A new title will be featured every month throughout the year.

Maureen LaFerney, who headed up the project for the library, said, “We’re so pleased with the results of this project. Plainfield is an active community and the StoryWalk® is a perfect fit. Many families enjoy visiting Hummel Park and we hope that the StoryWalk will be a wonderful addition.”

The project is sponsored by the Duke Energy Foundation, the Hendricks County Community Foundation  and the Friends of the Library. Learn more here

World Population Day and population statistics resources

UN

Thursday, July 11, 2019 is World Population Day, as celebrated by the United Nations. Many resources on population studies across the world provided by the U.N., including the website of the U.N. Statistics Division, can be found here.

Outside of the U.N. website, there are several other population data resources available. The current estimated count of the United States and the world using the population clock can be viewed here, at the top right corner of the U.S. Census Bureau’s homepage. The Indiana Business Research Center maintains the StatsAmerica and StatsIndiana websites, which act as online portals to customized population data for the U.S. and Indiana, respectively. Population projections for all states can be found by using the center’s Population Projections webpage. Additionally, one can find maps and visualizations of Indiana’s projections here.

Indiana student wins national Letters About Literature competition

lal

The Library of Congress has announced the winners of its 2019 Letters About Literature national writing contest. The program asks students to write to an author about how his or her work affected their lives.

Yael Epstein of Carmel won the Level 2 National Prize, which includes students in grades 7 and 8. Epstein wrote to Ayaan Hirsi Ali, author of “Infidel.” Her letter details how traditional gender roles in her own religion have affected her life. Epstein's letter can be read here, along with the other first place letters from the Indiana competition.

The statewide Letters About Literature competition, presented by the Indiana Center for the Book, was held on April 13, 2019 at the Indiana State Library. Epstein's first-place showing earned her a spot in the national competition.

According to the Library of Congress, "More than 29,000 students from across the country participated in this year’s initiative. The contest is promoted by the Library’s Center for the Book through its affiliated state centers, state libraries, state humanities councils and other organizations."

As a national prize recipient, Epstein earned a $2,000 award in addition to the $100 first place state prize. The 2018-19 Letters About Literature contest for young readers was made possible by a generous grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, with additional support from gifts to the Center for the Book. The Indiana contest is additionally supported by the James and Madeleine McMullen Family Foundation and the Indiana State Library Foundation.

A full Library of Congress press release about the national event, including a list of all winners, can be read here. Click here to learn more about the Indiana Letters About Literature competition.
