The Institute of Museum and Library Services recently released data from their Public Libraries Survey for the 2017 fiscal year.
Out of 50 states and the District of Columbia, Indiana public libraries rank in the top 15 in total operating revenue per capita, total operating expenditures per capita, number of programs per capita, number of program attendance per capita, number of public-access computers per capita, number of print materials per capita and total FTE librarians per capita.
Ranking fourth in total circulation per capita, Indiana libraries are top ten in physical item holdings in the categories of books, audio and video. The state ranks 10th in physical book holdings, fourth in physical audio holdings and seventh in physical video holdings.
According to IMLS, "The Public Libraries Survey examines when, where, and how library services are changing to meet the needs of the public. These data, supplied annually by public libraries across the country, provide information that policymakers and practitioners can use to make informed decisions about the support and strategic management of libraries."
A summary of the survey data can be found here.
The nomination deadline for the Indiana Library Federation's Read Aloud Champion Award is this Sunday, June 30, 2019.
The Read Aloud Champion Award honors professionals or volunteers who demonstrate outstanding commitment to reading aloud in a school, library or community-based Indiana program to further a lifelong love of reading. The award is intended to recognize read aloud achievements of an individual or an organization during the prior year.
Minimum criteria must be met for consideration. ILF requires a nominee who, in the prior year, advocated the importance of reading aloud or who participated in reading aloud to children under 18. Two letters of support from professional colleagues that include a description of the impact and contributions of the nominee, such as hours, activities and results, are also required.
The nominee does not have to be an Indiana Library Federation member. Submission of video and audio recordings are encouraged, but not required. The nomination form can be found here.
Please contact Courtney Brown, Southeast regional coordinator at the Indiana State Library, with any questions.
