The La Porte County Public Library’s mission is to be the center of community life with a focus on reading, lifelong learning and public involvement. With this mission in mind, the library is collaborating with the La Porte Community School Corporation, the Collaborative Summer Library Program and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to nourish young minds with stories and fill empty bellies with nutritious food. USDA's Summer Food Service Program is a federally-funded, state-administered program established to ensure that children continue to receive meals when school is not in session. Click here to read CSLP's guide to the program.
LPCPL is not the only library undertaking this type of initiative. Libraries across the country are taking a “whole child” approach to summer by supplementing traditional summer opportunities for learning and social interaction with healthy food to bridge the summer food gap.
Four LPCPL locations qualify for the USDA Summer Food Service Program based on free and reduced lunch rates and U.S. census data. Each of the locations will be summer food service sites on their regular days of operation. Any child age 18 and younger can receive a free meal or snack at these locations.
Meals and snacks will be served from June 10 - July 25, 2019. Click here for a list of qualifying LPCPL locations and times that food will be served.
On Saturday, June 22, 2019, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Indianapolis Public Library will present Indy Bookfest 2019. A Center for Black Literature and Culture event at the Central Library, this free, all-ages program is a day of celebrating authors and books.
There will be an artist's market, a writer's workshop, children's activities, vendors and registration opportunities for both the Summer Reading Program and library cards. Juneteenth will also be celebrated with a Civil War reenactment. Comedian Patricia "Ms. Pat" Williams will be the keynote speaker. Dr. Anna-Lisa Cox, author of "The Bone and Sinew of the Land: America's Forgotten Black Pioneers and the Struggle for Equality," will be a special guest speaker.
The Central Library is located at 40 E. St. Clair St. in Indianapolis. Please contact Nichelle Hayes of the Center for Black Literature and Culture with any questions.
The Collaborative Summer Library Program is now accepting entries for its Teen Video Challenge. The Teen Video Challenge is an annual video contest open to all teens, with librarian and teacher support encouraged. According to CSLP, "The challenge is for teens to create a public services announcement-type video that shows their unique interpretation of the 2019 CSLP slogan 'A Universe of Stories.' Videos are to be no longer than 60 seconds and should promote libraries and reading."
This year, instead of state winners, there will be five national winners. To enter the challenge, teens just have to submit a link to their video. Permission and model release forms will only be required from the winning entries. Video uploads will not be limited to YouTube and Vimeo; rather, teens can upload to the social media outlet of their choice. Read more about the challenge here.
The deadline for submission is Aug. 2, 2019. The submission form can be found here. For more information about the 2019 Teen Video Challenge, please contact Luke Kralik.
The Indiana University Northwest Library is undergoing a renovation project during the next several months. During this time, library staff will not have access to retrieve government documents.
For immediate needs, researchers are encouraged to utilize the govinfo service, as well as contact the Indiana State Library at 317-232-3733, or another Indiana depository, for access to their tangible collections. A list of Indiana federal depository libraries can be found here.
Renovation of the building should be complete in the fall. Click here for a renovation FAQ.

The American Library Association released a Libraries’ Guide to the 2020 Census in May. The 25-page PDF is available for free download on the ALA’s 2020 census website. This publication explains the basic procedures Census Bureau employees follow to obtain an accurate count, describes how and when people will receive census materials, and answers important questions that will come up about the census, such as:
- How will the online response option work?
- Who is at risk of being undercounted in 2020?
- How can libraries prepare?
It also contains a directory of the Census Bureau’s regional offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia. Additional online resources useful for census outreach from the ALA, Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality and the City University of NY are listed.
The Census Bureau also released its 2020 census campaign tagline in May, “Shape your future. START HERE.” View the press release here. The Census Bureau will release more materials as the key outreach period for the census approaches.
The 2019-2020 InfoExpress renewal period closes next month. Libraries must renew their registration before July 1, 2019 to continue to receive uninterrupted service. Payment will be due by July 31, 2019. Service will be suspended effective August 1, 2019 if payment is not received in full by July 31. The 2019-2020 service year runs from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020. A 2% surcharge will apply to all payments made electronically or postmarked after July 31.
The Indiana State Library will continue to offer a convenient flat-fee annual subscription model and has increased subsidies for the service as much as feasible, but the costs for this service will increase for the first time in five years. The annual subscription cost for InfoExpress service will be $910 per delivery day. The Indiana State Library will provide an upfront subsidy of $610 for the first delivery day for qualifying libraries, making one-day-per-week service available for $300. Public libraries not meeting standards and corporate libraries are not eligible for this subsidy. This subsidy is limited to one library per system. Branches are not eligible for this subsidy. The cost for non-subsidized libraries is $910 per service day annually.
Additionally, select libraries may qualify for an additional $210 resource sharing rate subsidy if they subscribe to a second day of service. In order to qualify for this second day subsidy, a library must meet one of the following criteria: subscribe to five-day-a-week InfoExpress service; subscribe to OCLC ILL system; participate as a member of Evergreen Indiana; participate in SRCS; or be a net lender.
InfoExpress service may be renewed here. Please contact InfoExpress with questions about the service or the renewal process.
