Astronaut Jerry Ross to visit Plainfield library

jerry

On Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. Crown Point native, Purdue alum, former United States Air Force officer and retired record-setting astronaut Jerry Ross will visit the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library. Ross will speak about his experiences and answer questions. His appearance is part of the A Universe of Stories summer reading program.

“We are very proud to offer this opportunity to our community. The event is for all ages, everyone is welcome, and there are no tickets or reservations needed,” said Nick Philip, library services supervisor.

With nine spacewalks, Colonel Ross is tied for third among spacewalkers worldwide and second in the U.S. for the most spacewalks performed. He has spent 58 hours on spacewalks during his time with NASA, but his total time spent in space is over 1,393 hours. Ross has been awarded two Defense Superior Service Medals, the Air Force Legion of Merit, four Defense Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Force Meritorious Service Medals, the National Intelligence Medal of Achievement and 15 NASA medals.

Ross is the published author of two books that can be purchased at the program. His books provide an account of the U.S. space shuttle program, as well as personal stories detailing his experiences. He will be available to autograph books.

Click here for additional information. The event is presented by the Friends of the Library. The library is located at 1120 Stafford Road in Plainfield. Questions may be directed here.

Registration is now open for the 2019 Indiana Library Federation Youth Services Conference. This year's theme is "Libraries: Rated E For Everyone." The conference will take place at the Renaissance Indianapolis North Hotel in Carmel, just north of Indianapolis, on Aug. 25-26, 2019.

The Youth Services Conference boasts that it is "the" conference for youth service librarians for children ages 0-18. Hosting over 200 attendees in past years, the Youth Services Conference offers a great experience and an opportunity to learn in a fun and interactive environment. This year's keynote speaker is Zachariah OHora, illustrator of the New York Times best-selling book "Wolfie the Bunny." OHora is the author and illustrator of a number of award-winning books, including "Niblet & Ralph," - described by ILF as a "'Parent Trap' for cats" - that was featured on "The Today Show."

A preliminary conference program can be found here. The program includes times and descriptions of all sessions, speaker bios, a list of exhibitors and information on the 2019 Youth Services Leadership Team.

Full conference registration for ILF members is $180. Full conference registration for non-members is $265. One-day registration for ILF members is $100 and one-day registration for non-members is $160. Attendees may register here. Group registration is also available here. Second Indiana State Library free lecture announced

ISLLogo

“Digging Deep into Land Records,” the second event in a summer lecture series hosted by the Indiana State Library, will take place on Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 11 a.m. and will feature two presentations. The first presentation, “Map Reading for Genealogists: When North isn't...” presented by John Barr, will make locating an ancestor's real property a lot easier by helping attendees understand the terminology and methods used by surveyors from days gone past. “Land Records: A Family Historian’s ‘Bread and Butter’” will be presented by Amber Oldenburg. Attendees will learn what land records are, why they are so valuable and how to use them to further their genealogical research. Those interested in attending may register here. Registration deadline is Wednesday, July 10, 2019.

The lecture series, focused on history and genealogy, will take place at the state library on the second Saturday of June, July and August, with each one-hour presentation beginning at 11 a.m. Light snacks will be provided and each lecture is eligible for one LEU for Indiana librarians. The lectures are free and registration is required.

Visit the Indiana State Library's Events and Public Workshops page for more information about future lectures and other library events.

Please contact Stephanie Asberry, deputy director of public services at the Indiana State Library, with any questions about the lecture series or individual presentations.

The 19th Amendment

gen

One hundred years ago, on June 4, 1919, the U.S. Congress, by joint resolution, approved the woman’s suffrage amendment and sent it to the states for ratification. The House of Representatives voted 304-89 and the Senate 56-25 in favor of the 19th Amendment. Learn more and link to additional resources about the history of the suffragist movement and women’s struggle for the right to vote through the Library Congress’ Today in History.

During their 2019 session, the Indiana General Assembly passed HEA 1394 to create the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission. Effective April 30, 2019 with Gov. Holcomb’s signature, this new commission was established to promote activities that commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. A fund to pay for special projects of the commission is also established. The Indiana Women's Suffrage Centennial Commission "shall seek to promote activities that commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States." The commission will also "establish the Indiana women's suffrage centennial commission fund to pay for special projects of the commission."

Next year, Aug. 26, 2020 will mark the official adoption of the 19th Amendment when three-fourths of the states had ratified the amendment. IndianaSuffrage100.org will present history, news, events and projects organized by the Indiana Women’s Suffrage Centennial in partnership with Indiana Humanities, the Indianapolis Propylaeum, the Indiana Historical Society, the Indiana Historical Bureau and more. Hoosiers are invited to honor the ideas and ideals that fueled the suffrage movement in Indiana and the people who led the way; to engage in a conversation about inclusion, equity, perseverance and power; to consider what remains to be done to ensure that our democracy truly includes everyone; and to identify and act on the lessons of the women’s suffrage movement.
