Five picture books have been nominated to win this year's Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award. Voting closes on Wednesday, May 15, 2019. The five books were chosen from a list of titles nominated in 2018 by librarians all over Indiana who work with children. A committee of librarians chose these five books from over 30 nominated titles, primarily because the books excel at getting children to talk, sing, read, write and play – all foundational practices in encouraging early literacy skills in young children.
The nominations are “A Hippy Hoppy Toad” by Indiana author Peggy Archer, “Jabari Jumps” by Gaia Cornwall, “There’s a Monster in Your Book” by Tom Fletcher, “Hello Hello” by Brendan Wenzel and “Play This Book” by Jessica Young.
Ruth Fraser, manager of the Klondike Branch of the Tippecanoe County Public Library said about the award, “I love that it encourages caregivers to engage with the youngest learners, and gives kids the opportunity to have a say in their favorite books. It teaches parents how to nurture the important voices of their children.”
The ballot for the award can be found here. Click here to read more about the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award and to read more about the nominated books.
The Indiana Business Librarian Summit is now the Midwest Business Librarian Summit. The summit will take place on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 beginning at 10 a.m. in the Hicks Undergraduate Library on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette.
The day-long summit will provide business librarians and liaisons the opportunity to discuss what they are all working on, what resources they love, teaching strategies and more. The summit will be structured but informal, with ample time for participants to get to know one another and learn more about business librarianship. Attendees should plan on bringing a five-minute lightning talk discussing projects they are currently working on or have recently completed.
The summit is free and will include on-campus parking at Purdue. Click here to learn more about the summit. Click here to register.
Please contact Heather Howard, of Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies, with any questions.
Amanda Kingswell, teen services librarian at the Jennings County Public Library in North Vernon, has been selected to attend the Collaborative Summer Library Program 2019 Annual Meeting with Indiana State Library Children’s Consultant Beth Yates. Since Yates currently serves on the CSLP board of directors, Indiana was permitted to invite a second attendee to the meeting - all expenses paid - which will take place on Sept. 16-19 at the Westin in downtown Indianapolis.
Kingswell was selected based on her active role in planning her library’s summer reading program, her participation on the Youth Services Division leadership team and her ability to bring a rural library perspective to the meeting. At the meeting, she will be invited to share her thoughts on the future of summer reading with representatives from all 50 states, plus six island nations and territories.

On Thursday, May 2, 2019, the Indiana Deaf History Museum's new exhibit "Welcome to the Museum!" will be featured at the Indiana State Library.
In celebration of the Indiana School for the Deaf's 175th anniversary, the museum has created a special exhibit to showcase photos and artifacts that used to be on display in the school museum, including a unique collection of over 50 handmade dolls.
Attendees can also meet and chat with the current museum director, Kris Johnson, to learn more about preserving deaf Hoosier heritage. The opening event begins at 4:30 p.m.
The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular business hours at the library, May through September. Learn more about the event here.

First Steps is a service provided by the Family and Social Services Administration. The program is the state’s early intervention system, working to ensure that all Indiana families with children ages birth to 3-years-old who are experiencing developmental delays or disabilities have access to early intervention services and resources. Visit the First Steps eligibility page to see which conditions are covered. First Steps also includes a list of the services they provide eligible families.
The First Steps program served 26,074 children and families in the past year alone. Regional First Step offices are located throughout the state. First Steps also provides links to resources relating to children age 3 and older who may be showing signs of delayed development. For parents who are unsure if a child is behind in his or her development, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provide information on developmental childhood milestones.
