“Springtime along the South Shore Line” on display at state library

shore

Visit the Indiana State Library’s Exhibition Hall and Great Hall to view colorful large-scale Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad posters from the late 1920s. The advertisements depict scenes and landscapes along Lake Michigan’s south shore and the Indiana Dunes, as interpreted by artists Otto Brenneman, Clara Fahrenbach, Oscar Rabe Hanson and Raymond Huelster. These South Shore Line posters and others in the library’s collection were recently digitized for online access through the Indiana State Library Broadsides Collection.

For a limited time, the Exhibition Hall will include several hand-colored, circa 1930 silver gelatin photographs of the Indiana Dunes created by Bertha E. Dunham. The images were a gift to Hazel B. Warren, an Indiana State Library employee, in 1930.

The Indiana State Library’s exhibits are free and open to the public during regular business hours and will remain on display through April 2019. For hours of operation, directions and parking information, click here.

The South Shore Line continues providing service as an electrically-powered interurban commuter rail line under the authority of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District. It operates between Millennium Station in downtown Chicago and the South Bend International Airport in South Bend.

YALSA consultant visits Indiana

YALSA

On March 26-27, 2019, Young Adult Library Services Association Continuing Education Consultant Linda Braun traveled to Indiana to present two full-day workshops for librarians who serve teens. The workshops took place at the Brown County Public Library and Indiana University Kokomo. Both workshops were funded by the IMLS LSTA grant.

During the workshop, librarians learned how to connect crucial social emotional skills - self-awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, self-management and relationship skills - to the programs they do for teens. These skills can help teens become successful adults, and libraries are poised to have a significant impact developing this skill set.

During the workshop, participants learned how to describe the value of what they do for and with teens. They also built an understanding of how social emotional learning fits into the work that they do and explored how to engage with community to develop services that ultimately help teens to grow up successfully.

Click here to learn more about YALSA. Contact Beth Yates, children’s consultant at the Indiana State Library, with any questions about the YALSA workshop.

Congressional District web tools

cond

How can library workers keep patrons informed about their U.S. congressional districts? They can direct them to the My Congressional District web tool from the U.S. Census Bureau. The web tool can be used to find annual American Community Survey and County Business Pattern data about people in Indiana’s nine congressional districts, including labor force and unemployment figures, veteran and disability status reports, school enrollment, educational attainment and more. Users can download data from one particular district or all districts and share on social media. One can also embed the tool’s widget on their library’s website easily.

The Indiana General Assembly has a Find Your Legislator web tool that can help with information about Indiana Senate and House legislators. Printable and interactive maps of legislative districts can be found here via StatsIndiana. For access to GIS boundary files for Marion County districts, city and town councils, wards and precincts, visit OpenIndy.

La Porte County Public Library adds Kanopy film streaming service

kanopy

The La Porte County Public Library is pleased to announce the launch of video streaming service Kanopy. The service provides customers with access to over 30,000 films from more than 800 filmmakers, with around 200 to 250 titles added each month. Kanopy’s unique collection consists of documentaries, foreign films, learning cinema, local content, cult classics and arthouse films. Kanopy’s partners include The Criterion Collection, The Great Courses, Kino Lorber, PBS, First Run Features, Samuel Goldwyn Films and Paramount Classics.

Kanopy is supported on more devices than any other streaming service, including iPad and iPhone on iOS, Apple TV on tvOS, Galaxy on Android, Roku and more. Films also feature embed tools, group showing rights, online comments, social media apps, captions and transcripts, ratings and real-time usage data. To watch titles specific to children, users should click the Kids link to enter the kid-friendly zone of titles.

At this time, library customers are limited to 10 play credits per month. A play credit is incurred when a customer clicks play or starts a film. Once a user play credit is logged, the customer has three full days to watch the film for unlimited uses. A customer can track their existing and past play credits from their user dashboard.

To access Kanopy, customers should visit the site here to log in or to create an account. For more information, contact the La Porte County Public Library by calling 219-362-6156 or visiting the library's website
