The Frankfort Community Public Library's 3rd Annual Women's Expo is scheduled for March 16, 2019 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on the second floor of the library. Eva Kor, Holocaust survivor and forgiveness advocate, will speak at 1 p.m. in the Elizabeth O’Rear Skanta Theatre. The event is free.
For the past 40 years, Kor has shared her story with students, teachers, medical professionals, historians and civic groups, both nationally and internationally. Kor is one of the few surviving twins sharing her personal account of the medical experiments supervised by Nazi doctor Josef Mengele at Auschwitz. Kor's account of her survival of the Holocaust offers many relevant lessons on the dangers of hate and prejudice, and the consequences of allowing prejudice to persist, unchecked, in others. She tells her story in the book "Surviving the Angel of Death: The True Story of a Mengele Twin in Auschwitz" and in the PBS documentary "Eva."
Over 30 women-owned businesses will be present at the expo, selling products and networking. Additional speakers include Tipton author Janis Thornton and entrepreneur Rosa Gaeta Cornejo.
Free tickets for Kor’s presentation will be passed out at 12 p.m. on the day of the expo. Each person will receive only one ticket, and tickets may not be reserved in advance. Kaspar Radio, WILO, will live stream the program online and throughout the library. Kor will be available for pictures after her presentation, and pre-signed books can be purchased for $12. More information can be found here, including a list of vendors and a schedule of events.
The Indiana Library Federation has five 2019 regional conferences planned for the month of April. ILF encourages participants to attend the conference that is most convenient for them.
The South East Regional Conference will take place on April 2 at Ivy Tech in Sellersburg; the West Central Regional Conference will take place on April 5 at the Crawfordsville Public Library; the East Central Regional Conference will take place on April 10 at Ivy Tech in Richmond, the South West Regional Conference will take place on April 16 at the Evansville-Vanderburgh Public Library; and the North Central Regional Conference will take place on April 22 at the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library.
This year’s overall professional development theme is “Libraries, Where Everyone is Welcome.” ILF is focusing strongly on inclusivity and diversity.
Registration rates for all regional conferences are $45 for members and $55 for non-members. Click here for more information, including specific conference details, individual and group registration links and programs for each conference.
The Hoosier Adult Library Organization will host a summer reading program-based round table discussion on Monday, May 6, 2019 from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. at the North Webster Community Public Library. The library is located at 301 N. Main St. in North Webster.
HALO encourages adult programmers to bring upcoming program plans and ideas, including items for summer reading initiatives. During this round table, librarians will brainstorm ideas, discuss upcoming events and share stories of programs that have either been successful or have failed. HALO meetings are open to all public librarians in adult programming. This round table is eligible for one LEU. Those planning on attending should send an RSVP to Beth Smith, HALO facilitator.
HALO consists of 15-25 adult programmers, representing 12-18 libraries across the state. The group meets quarterly and the meeting locations rotate throughout the year. HALO routinely shares contact info of presenters and offers opportunities to collaborate and plan a program share among neighboring libraries. There are also opportunities for neighboring libraries to discuss the potential of sharing costs for procuring presenters.
Please contact Shondra Brown with any questions regarding the round table or the HALO organization.

February is American Heart Month. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s heart disease webpage, every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a heart attack. That’s about 790,000 people every year. With this staggering number of heart attacks occurring in the United States alone, just knowing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack can save a life.
The CDC lists the five major symptoms of a heart attack as being: Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck or back; feeling weak, light-headed or faint; chest pain or discomfort; pain or discomfort in arms or shoulder; and shortness of breath.
There are also other symptoms of a heart attack. They include unusual or unexplained tiredness and nausea or vomiting. It’s important to note that women are more likely to have these other symptoms. The webpage shows an image of what heart attack signs and symptoms a man or a woman might have.
The CDC webpage goes on to give information on life after a heart attack, other conditions related to heart disease, heart disease statistics and preventing heart disease. For more information on heart health visit the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute webpage, which gives information on topics including the DASH eating plan, diabetic heart disease, broken heart syndrome, smoking and your heart, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
Both organizations’ webpages are good resources for learning about a dangerous and even deadly health issue during American Heart Month.
On Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, the Mooresville Public Library held a staff professional development day. In addition to partaking in all of the events and activities that normally happen during an in-service training day, library staff also filmed an infomercial for its Beyond Books collection.
Beyond Books is a collection of non-traditional items, ranging from cookie cutters to board games, that the library loans out for free to patrons who possess a library card. Director of Youth Services and Library Programs Casey O'Leary said, "The Beyond Books collection at Mooresville Public Library invites patrons to check out a variety of household items, including games, cookware and several 'as seen on TV' items to try before they buy them."
"MPL staff filmed a 3-4 minute infomercial to promote the collection. Everyone had a great time highlighting the collection with humor and gusto!," O'Leary added.
The video can be viewed here. Click here for more information about the library's Beyond Books collection.
