Presidents’ Day was this past Monday, Feb. 18. The holiday offers an opportunity to share resources related to American presidents. The Library of Congress is the place to go for a chronological list of presidents, first ladies and vice presidents of the United States. Each President in the list is accompanied by the years in which he served and the embedded links lead to images from the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division for each president, first lady and vice president going back to George Washington. The White House also provides a chronological list of the presidents along with links to in-depth profiles and short histories describing each leader drawn from “The Presidents of the United States of America” by Frank Freidel and Hugh Sidey. Check the USA.gov presidents resource page for additional information regarding requirements to hold office, the order of succession and an overview of the election process.
Using these resources, one can plan a visit to a presidential library or museum. The National Archives and Records Administration runs the presidential library system, which began in 1939 under the President Franklin Roosevelt administration and continued with the Presidential Libraries Acts of 1955 and 1986. At the end of each president’s tenure, a search is conducted for a location related to his life and presidency. There are a total of 14 libraries currently in operation, which can be visited in person or online. For more details, visit the frequently asked questions webpage for the presidential libraries.
