Culver-Union Township Public Library holds 'I am an Artist' event

culver

The Culver-Union Township Public Library held its annual "I am an Artist" event on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. The event is a step-by-step painting class for students in grades K-6 presented by local artist and I am an Artist business owner Shelly Schrimsher. In order to participate in this free event, each student had to bring in two food items to donate to the local food pantry. The event was fully-funded by the local Friends of the Library volunteer group and the paintings will be on display in the children’s room for the entire year.

“We are thrilled to be able to host this event for the past five years. The kids have a blast every year and we love to see the children’s expressions when they visit the library and see their work on display,” said Youth Services Manager Esmie Rodgers.

Visit the library's events calendar to view upcoming programs.

LSTA grant applications now available online

ISLLogo

The 2019 LSTA grant application and instructions have been posted to the Indiana State Library’s website. Along with the application itself, the LSTA page has a multitude of resources to aid in the process, including current guidelines, application recommendations and FAQs.

Applicants can apply for a technology grant up to $8,000 or digitization grant up to $15,000. Applications are due March 22, 2019.

While the process is largely similar to previous years, there is one change that will impact everyone looking to apply: the Indiana State Library no longer requires a physical application to be mailed in addition to the emailed application. Applications must have a valid signature, be it an electronic signature - an Adobe Acrobat verified signature or signature file - or a page that has been printed, signed and scanned.

Please contact Public Library Services and LSTA Consultant Angela Fox with any questions.

'Lincoln' visits Rensselaer library

Earlier this month, history buffs, students and the whole community were invited to the Rensselaer Public Library, part of the Jasper County Public Library system, to honor one of the nation’s best-loved presidents, Abraham Lincoln. On Thursday, Jan. 17, Danny Russel portrayed Lincoln, with his customary black suit and ever-present stovepipe hat. Attendees learned about his amazing journey as an Indiana boy growing up in a log cabin to his nomination as president and life in the White House. In addition to being a lifetime member of the National Association of Lincoln Presenters, Russel is a four-time grant recipient honored by the Indiana Arts Commission.

In conjunction with the program, a living history display was made possible through generous support of the Daughters of the American Revolution General Van Rensselaer Chapter and Jackson Funeral Chapels. A replica of the coffin in which Lincoln was buried was on display Jan. 17-21. On loan from Batesville Casket Company of Batesville, Indiana, the replica was constructed for use at funeral home open houses and historical events, such as Civil War reenactments. Batesville did not construct the original coffin, but used original plans to build the replica. “This living history display is a great tool for schools, historical groups, or interested individuals,” said Julie Hesson, a funeral director at Jackson Funeral Chapels and DAR member.

World Cancer Day

WCD

Feb. 4, 2019 is World Cancer Day. According to the World Cancer Day website, "World Cancer Day empowers all of us across the world to show support, raise our collective voice, take personal action and press our governments to do more." The website encourages people to take action by laying out what individuals can do in terms of the time they have. For example, if one has a "hot second," there are instructions on how to take part in a social media activity. If one has five minutes, there are instructions on using an advocacy guide to advocate. Click here to review all of the actions.

On the federal level, The National Cancer Institute is part of the National Institutes of Health. NIH is one of the of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' eleven agencies. They offer cancer research resources, information on different type of cancer, grant application information and more.

The Indiana State Department of Health offers many resources related to cancer, including a general index to Indiana cancer reports. A 2017 fact sheet shows that breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in Indiana with 122.8 cases per 100,000 females. The fact sheet also shows cancer as the second-leading cause of death in Indiana, behind heart disease, with 13,494 deaths in 2014. Click here to view the entire fact sheet.
