Tippecanoe County Public Library announces new hours

tcpl

On Tuesday morning, Jan. 2, 2018, new operating hours will begin at all three Tippecanoe County Public Library (TCPL) buildings. The Downtown Library continues to open at 9:00 a.m., but now closes at 8:00 p.m.

“This is the first time Downtown Library hours have changed since 1993,” said TCPL Board of Trustees President Mida  P. Grover. “Library staff  keep records about how library customers use each building. The statistics show people use the Downtown Library earlier in the day and, by 8:00 p.m., most customers are gone.”

In response to customer demands, the Klondike and Wyandotte Branches will now open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

“We built the branches so neighborhoods in both areas could enjoy convenient library services,” said County Librarian Jos N. Holman. “The need to be open more hours there is really a compliment to branch staff, collections and services.”

“When you add up the open hours for all three buildings,” said Grover, “TCPL actually is open one more hour total each week!”

“TCPL drop boxes are always open,” said Holman. “Customers can drop off materials at each building, and there are TCPL drop boxes at all area Pay Less Super Markets.”

New hours effective Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2018:

Downtown Library
Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Friday – Saturday, 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Sunday, 1 - 5 p.m.

Klondike & Wyandotte Branches
Monday – Thursday, 10 a.m. - 8 p.m.
Friday – Saturday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Sunday, 1 - 5 p.m.

Government Information Minute

Welcome to the Government Information Minute. Participating in the 2020 U.S. census

census

Many U.S. citizens have recently received a census-related survey postcard or envelope from the U.S. Department of Commerce or the Census Bureau. If this brings up questions, take a look at the Census Bureau’s helpful Are You In A Survey? for verification and for tips on participating in surveys. It will detail how the Census Bureau ensures one’s anonymity and protects privacy.

The 2020 census is approaching and with it comes census tests, address updates and the decennial census itself. The chances of the public interacting with a census field worker or employee are higher during this time. Besides the decennial census, the Census Bureau also conducts more than 130 surveys each year, which can be viewed here. Remember that the Indiana State Data Center at the Indiana State Library is always prepared to help answer census questions.

Stay tuned throughout the next two years for more details about the 2020 census, how one can promote its importance in your community and future employment opportunities. The Indiana State Data Center takes calls from individuals wanting to know more about the process of participating in Census Bureau surveys. The data center will also refer the public to Chicago’s Regional Office of the Census Bureau and to the center’s partners at the U.S. Census Bureau in Suitland, Maryland.

Nearly 50 Indiana libraries awarded 'Frankenstein' grants

human

Indiana Humanities, in partnership with the Indiana State Library and the Indiana Center for the Book, have awarded more than 70 nonprofits with funding to help bring “Frankenstein” to life in their community and to participate in a statewide read of the book in 2018. Of the 70-plus nonprofits, 48 are Indiana libraries, including some individual branches. The grants are part of the year-long "One State / One Story: Frankenstein" program.

The $1,000 Community Read grants help the organizations fund at least three programs related to "Frankenstein" in 2018, including a book discussion. Each site will receive up to 50 copies of the book and additional promo materials. Select organizations will receive a $1,000 Frankenfest grant to hold a unique "Frankenstein" event, a read-a-thon of the book, in 2018.
