Call for proposals: Wrangling Library Data

amigos

More data is available to librarians now than ever before. Librarians get circulation data from their integrated library systems (ILS) and other third-party vendors. They acquire demographic information from their communities. They receive bibliographic data from MARC records and other utilities. Budget data, survey data, collection data, website analytics, in-house use data and help desk data are just the beginning when it comes to data collection. Librarians are no longer confined to working with data from a single source, but are able to take data from multiple sources, connect them to each other and discover more about themselves and their patrons.

In our Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018 online conference, "Wrangling Library Data: Analytics, Dashboards and Spreadsheets ," Amigos would like to explore what libraries are doing with their data. How are libraries handling data? Where does it come from? How do libraries normalize and manipulate data that comes from multiple sources? What options do libraries have for displaying the results? These are just some of the topics that may be explored in a presentation.

Tabatha Farney, author of "Using Digital Analytics for Smart Assessment" is the keynote speaker. As the director of web services and emerging technologies for the Kraemer Family Library at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Tabatha brings her experience using, and writing about, different types of analytics.

For those interested in submitting proposals, they are due no later than Dec. 8, 2017. Proposals may be submitted here

Questions about the conference topic, or presenting at an online conference, may be directed toward Christine Peterson, continuing education librarian, via email or at (800) 843-8482; ext. 2891.

National Space Council

nasa

The National Space Council was created in 1989 as a body within the Executive Office of the President of the United States. The council was disbanded in 1993, and re-established in June 2017 by President Donald Trump with Executive Order 13803. The re-established National Space Council held their first meeting on October 5, 2017, at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia. The council, chaired by Vice President Mike Pence, heard testimony from representatives from civil space, commercial space and national security space industry representatives. Read the NASA Statement on National Space Council Policy for Future American Leadership in Space and link to the entire meeting on video.

The National Space Council recommended that America set goals to return to the moon and land there, to provide leadership for human exploration missions to Mars and beyond and to stay ahead of threats to national space security. Be sure to view NASA's new video, "We Are the Explorers 2017," available here.

The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 (Public Law 85–568) created the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Led by a civilian Administrator who is a Presidential appointee, NASA carries out U. S. civil aerospace research and development. Within the Federal budget, NASA is a non-defense discretionary (NDD) program that Congress funds on an annual basis. NASA’s fiscal year 2018 budget is posted here.  The annual Aeronautics and Space Report of the President contains information on aerospace activities conducted by 14 Federal departments and agencies, as well as appendices containing useful historical data on spacecraft launches and budget figures.

To learn more about international collaboration for space exploration, visit the website of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), which “works to promote international cooperation in the peaceful use and exploration of space, and in the utilization of space science and technology for sustainable economic and social development.” The Outer Space Treaty of 1967 provides the basic framework for international space law.
