ilf

The Indiana Library Federation (ILF) has announced the 2017 Indiana Library Federation Award winners. ILF began receiving nominations for the awards in April of this year and accepted them until June 30. The Awards and Honors committee met in late July to discuss and choose the award winners.

The formal awards and recognition program has been offered continuously for decades, but has roots dating back over a century. Over its 126-year history, awards presented by Indiana Library Federation have reflected the outstanding contributions by libraries, librarians, trustees and many other supporters.

“The modern library is a vibrant center of learning and culture. We are pleased to recognize outstanding libraries through our awards programs,” said Vicki Builta, chair of the Awards, Honors and Scholarship Committee.

The 2017 winners are as follows:

  • Federation Volunteer Award - Debbie Rzepczynski, Lake County Public Library
  • Indiana Library Federation Lifetime Achievement Award – Susie Highley, retired, Creston Middle/Intermediate School
  • Outstanding Librarian Award – Nancy Newport, Carmel Clay Public Library
  • Outstanding New Librarian Award - Katherine Huddle, Carmel Clay Public Library
  • Outstanding New School Librarian Award - Stacey Kern, Clark-Pleasant Middle School
  • Outstanding Library Award – Lake County Public Library
  • Outstanding Library Staff Award – Linda Meid, Raymond Park Middle School/Intermediate Academy
  • Peggy L. Pfieffer Service Award – Susie Highley, retired, Creston Middle/Intermediate School
  • Programming Award – Vigo County Public Library
  • Sara Laughlin Marketing Award - Monroe County Public Library

Mike McIntyre, board president of this year's Outstanding Library Award winner Lake County Public Library, said "We always knew we were an outstanding library, but now the rest of the state knows it, too. We really feel honored that we were chosen."

Visit ILF's website for more information on the awards, including a list of past winners.

Educational opportunities for genealogy library staff

gen

The Indiana Genealogical Society (IGS) is inviting Indiana library staff who help the public with genealogy research to apply for a $500 Library Staff Educational Scholarship. The scholarship is to help with the expenses of attending a genealogy education opportunity, be it a national conference, seminar or workshop.

Additionally, a $500 cash award will be presented to the sponsoring library to be used for the acquisition of genealogy resources. The winner also receives a one-time complimentary registration to the IGS Annual Conference, as well as a one-time complimentary 12-month IGS membership. Finally, the winner will be recognized during the annual conference held on the campus of Indiana University East in New Albany on Saturday, April 28, 2018.

Applications must be postmarked by Dec. 31, 2017. Contact Donna K. Adams, IGS southwest district director, for more information.

Hunting, trapping or fishing in Indiana

fish

Anyone interested in hunting, trapping or fishing in Indiana should go to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Hunting and Trapping website where he or she will find a wealth of useful information including an online version of the Indiana Hunting and Trapping Guide and the Indiana Fishing Regulations Guide.

On this site, sportsmen and sportswomen can find out what licenses they will need, what the fees for those licenses are, buy the license on-line for themselves or buy a gift certificate for someone else. There are links to Temporary Deer Transportation Tags that can be downloaded or printed. There is a site to register for a license to hunt migratory birds in Indiana as part of the Migratory Bird Harvest Information Program (HIP).

The Indiana DNR website includes the following pages dedicated to specific species:

Plus the site lets hunters know how to find hunting opportunities, such as getting permission to hunt on private land, where the check-in stations are and how to check-in the game online at CheckIN Game. Plus, for trappers there is a listing of licensed fur buyers by county included on the website.

Finally, always remember to follow all safety regulations. For instance, a hunter should always wear hunter orange, which the United States Forest Service website has as one of a number of important points about hunting on Forest Service Land, but is important no matter where a person is hunting.
