The Boomerang Sisterhood has awarded the Peru Public Library their top 2017 grant prize. According to the Northern Indiana Community Foundation, "This year’s grant recipients were selected from a pool of nine applicants. The grant committee of the Boomerang Sisterhood reviewed all submissions and selected the Peru Public Library, St. Vincent DePaul Society, Miami County Worth Remembering and the Peru Circus Festival Band to give presentations before the entire group. All finalists receive grant dollars."

The Peru Public Library borrowed robots from the Indiana State Library's Robot Petting Zoo kit to use as part of their presentation. Library Director Maryann Farnham and Michelle Spangler, children's program coordinator, exhibited the robots that they will purchase with the $1,500 award.

Meet Jamie Ford and earn up to 6 LEUs with IU Lifelong Learning and Monroe County Public Library

jam

New York Times bestselling author Jamie Ford is coming to Indiana and giving a free talk as part of Monroe County Public Library (MCPL) and the Friends of the Library’s bi-annual "Power of Words" author event. The event is Friday, Nov. 17 at the historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater in downtown Bloomington.

With mesmerizing and evocative storytelling, Ford’s work explores the themes of family, racism and love and loss with poignant, heartfelt prose. Ford discusses his novels, including "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet," and his experiences as a biracial Chinese American growing up in a multi-cultural family.

MCPL has partnered with Indiana University’s (IU) Lifelong Learning program to offer a special two-part course. The course, "Immigrants and the Power of Words," is an exploration of the immigrant experience in the United States through American literature.

In session one, "American Literature and the Immigrant Experience," MCPL's Elizabeth Gray takes a look at the history of immigrant fiction in American literature and how it shapes our culture, as well as a discussion on the portrayal of immigrants in Ford’s "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" and Celeste Ng’s "Everything I Never Told You."

In session two, "The Great American Melting Pot: Myth or Reality?," Indiana University’s Ellen Wu explores the various ways Americans and newcomers have treated migration as both a problem and a solution.

The IU Lifelong Learning course costs $65 and includes one ticket to "The Power of Words: An Evening with Jamie Ford" and admission to the author gala reception following the event. The course is approved by the Indiana State Library for six general library education units (LEUs). Contact Bara Swinson for more information and requirements. Learn more, including how to register for the course, at the Big Read website.

If you choose not to register for the IU Lifelong Learning course, you can still earn two LEUs by attending "The Power of Words: An Evening with Jamie Ford," a free ticketed event. Learn more, including how to register for your free ticket, at the Big Read website.

Ford’s visit is part of the Friends and Monroe County Public Library’s NEA Big Read grant initiative. With funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Friends and the library are supporting a community-wide read of Celeste Ng’s novel "Everything I Never Told You," including various arts and culture programming and book discussions. The NEA Big Read runs through April 2018.

This month the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) is encouraging all Hoosiers to take steps to make sure households and workplaces understand the best cybersecurity practices. View the full IDHS press release here. Learn about the latest cybersecurity efforts across America at “Stop. Think. Connect.Stop; make sure security measures are in place. The State of Indiana has already taken proactive steps to combat hacking and cyber-attacks on individuals and organizations. Governor Eric J. Holcomb convened the Indiana Executive Council on Cybersecurity in summer 2017 with representatives from leaders of state government agencies, state security officials and information technology and computer security experts from the private sector.

Job seekers interested in cybersecurity careers should consider attending the Cybersecurity Wants You! career fair, Thursday, Oct. 26, 8:30-11:30 a.m., 302 W. Washington Street Indianapolis, IN 46204, Indiana Government Center South, Atrium/Conference Room C, RSVP at EventBrite.

Connecticut State Library recruiting library teams for IMLS grant project

ct

Recruitment for Connecticut (CT) State Library’s Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) grant project, EXCITE Transformation for Libraries, opened Oct. 1, 2017.

EXCITE is an intensive team-based experiential learning program that will teach collaboration and innovation skills, result in programs and services that respond to community input and demonstrated needs, lead to cultural change at libraries and sustain project impact through extended training.

The CT State Library was thrilled to receive a Laura Bush 21st Century Librarians grant from IMLS this fall. The library is trying to spread the word as widely as possible about the project for the library workforce, including public, academic and special libraries. While their marketing efforts are aimed largely at the Northeast states, teams from any state can participate. CT State Library is providing up to $2,000 per team to help offset travel and substitute staffing costs and the training is tuition-free.

Click here for complete details. Contact Maria Bernier of the CT State Library with any questions.
